The DC Universe stands poised for a transformative shift. Following a decade marked by films that generated mixed reviews, the franchise is set for a fresh start with new leadership from James Gunn and Peter Safran. The previous phase, known as the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), began with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013. While audiences received it with moderate enthusiasm, its darker and more grounded portrayal of Superman laid a precarious foundation for subsequent films.
The DCEU quickly shifted focus from a solitary Superman narrative to the ambitious ensemble film Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. This film’s objective was multifaceted, as it not only had to introduce Batman and Wonder Woman but also teased future iterations of the Justice League. This choice significantly influenced the series’ trajectory. While some films found success, many others faltered, often leaving unresolved plotlines and perplexing character arcs.
With this new chapter, the DC Universe can reflect on the successes and failures of the DCEU, aiming for a more faithful depiction of its rich roster of characters and narratives. This new direction may allow for a redemption of missteps from past iterations.
13 DCU’s Batgirl Could Bring Much-Needed Attention to Barbara
Leslie Grace’s Batgirl Was Never Released
The cancellation of Batgirl sparked significant debate among fans and cast members alike. Leslie Grace remarked, “there was definitely potential for a good film, in my opinion.”Although the DCEU’s version of Barbara Gordon may remain unreleased, the DCU has the opportunity to introduce her in a future storyline, either as Batman’s ally or in her own leading role.
12 DCU’s Cyborg Could Compensate for the DCEU’s Oversight
Ray Fisher’s Cyborg Was Underused
Cyborg, also known as Victor Stone, has been a beloved figure among DC fans, making his initial inclusion in Justice League a cause for excitement. Historically, while he’s best known for his time with the Teen Titans, the New 52 also depicted him as a League member. However, the troubled production of Justice League led to a significant underrepresentation of the character, as many of Cyborg’s scenes were cut due to directorial changes and production issues.
The release of the Snyder Cut provided some resolution by restoring Cyborg’s narrative. Nevertheless, plans for his solo film were ultimately abandoned. With the new DCU’s plans to introduce the Teen Titans, there’s potential for Cyborg to rise to prominence once more on screen.
11 DCU’s Lois Lane Could Reintroduce the Iconic Reporter
Amy Adams’ Lois Lane: Well-Acted Yet Underwhelming
Amy Adams delivers a commendable performance as Lois Lane; however, many argue that her character portrayal lacks depth. Initially granting the audience insight into Superman’s world, Lois subsequently faded into the background, with minimal substance beyond her connection to Clark Kent. Traditionally depicted as a determined journalist, her character development was insufficient within the DCEU.
10 DCU’s Martian Manhunter Should Shine as a League Member
Harry Lennix’s Martian Manhunter Was Underused
Martian Manhunter’s inclusion in Zack Snyder’s interpretation of Justice League was both surprising and peculiar. Despite his relevance in a superhero ensemble, his screen time felt shoehorned, especially in scenes where deeper emotional moments were marred by sudden revelations. For the DCU, the hope is that Martian Manhunter is presented as a legitimate member of the Justice League, aligning with his significant role in comics and animated series.
9 DCU’s Lex Luthor Can Be More Formidable
Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor Offered a Different Perspective
Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of Lex Luthor attempted a fresh interpretation but fell short for many fans. Drawing comparisons to his Mark Zuckerberg performance, Eisenberg’s Luthor felt erratic and unconventional, despite having some strategic plans reminiscent of the character’s traditional schemes. However, this version strayed too far from the character’s essence.
With Nicholas Hoult slated to portray Lex in the upcoming Superman film, audiences anticipate a more authentic representation that resonates with classic depictions of the character.
8 DCU’s Joker Could Be More Exciting
Jared Leto’s Joker Misfired with Audiences
Jared Leto’s iteration of the Joker in Suicide Squad faced significant backlash. His aesthetic choices and character portrayal sparked ridicule even prior to the film’s debut. Ultimately, Leto’s performance was overshadowed by Harley Quinn’s introduction, who became the film’s standout character.
After appearing briefly in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Leto’s Joker gradually faded from public consciousness, particularly when compared to the iconic performances by Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix. If the DCU chooses to reintroduce the Joker, this presents an ideal opportunity to craft a version that resonates with audiences.
7 DCU’s Jimmy Olsen Should Shine as Superman’s Trusted Ally
Michael Cassidy’s Jimmy Olsen Failed to Connect
Jimmy Olsen serves as an essential character, embodying the qualities of friendship and mentorship in Superman’s life. However, under Snyder’s vision, Jimmy was eliminated early in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, reflecting a darker perspective. This portrayal deviated significantly from the classic interpretation, as he was depicted as an older CIA operative rather than the youthful counterpart fans recognize.
In contrast, Gunn’s approach reintroduces a younger Jimmy, played by Skylar Gisondo, who embodies the optimistic characteristics integral to Superman’s narrative. His inclusion will inject a sense of joy and dynamism into the DCU.
6 DCU’s Green Arrow Deserves a Proper Debut
Green Arrow Reduced to a Mere Punchline
As a fan-favorite character, the anticipation for Green Arrow’s introduction into the DCEU was palpable. Before Suicide Squad, speculation surrounded whether Scott Eastwood’s character might be a version of Oliver Queen. However, this did not materialize, and instead, his cameo in Peacemaker was limited to a one-off joke, failing to serve the character’s legacy.
With both the character’s popularity and a strong fan demand, the new DCU can redeem Oliver Queen by providing him with the spotlight and development he deserves.
5 DCU’s Nightwing Has Potential for Authentic Adaptation
The DCEU Squandered Dick Grayson’s Legacy
For years, Robin’s character has experienced an erratic journey in adaptations. Dick Grayson was a staple in early Batman portrayals but took a backseat in modern interpretations. The DCEU notably introduced a version of Robin that perished before the narrative began, leading to significant disappointment among fans.
However, the DCU strategy appears to embrace a more inclusive portrayal of the Robins, with Damian Wayne’s upcoming appearance alongside Batman. This sets the stage for Nightwing and others to finally assume their rightful prominence within the franchise’s framework.
4 DCU’s Darkseid Should Fulfill His Potential as a Major Threat
Darkseid’s Introduction Lacked Impact
The discourse surrounding Darkseid and Thanos often leads to comparisons, but many contend it’s unjust given the portrayal of both characters in their respective cinematic universes. Darkseid represents one of DC’s most formidable villains; however, his introduction in the DCEU was lacking depth and clarity. The rapid pacing and hurried setup of Justice League left viewers struggling to grasp the significance of key elements, such as the anti-life equation.
To maximize Darkseid’s impact in the DCU, the franchise should consider a gradual buildup. The DCEU attempted this through Steppenwolf’s allegiance to Darkseid, akin to Loki’s role with Thanos. Yet, the execution was muddled by the overarching narrative demands. The new DCU can capitalize on this opportunity by laying a robust foundation before Darkseid’s anticipated arrival.
