Crafting compelling movie trailers presents a unique challenge. Filmmakers must captivate potential audiences by revealing intriguing snippets while carefully guarding against divulging critical plot details or spoilers. The most engaging trailers effectively spark curiosity without compromising significant story arcs. Essential elements include exhilarating action sequences, clever one-liners, minimal exposition that sets the stage, atmospheric visuals, and glimpses that display the chemistry between the cast members.
However, the pressure to surprise viewers can sometimes lead to the overexposure of pivotal moments. Unfortunately, this often results in trailers that spoil shocking plot twists, diminishing the overall intrigue of the films they represent. While few exceptions exist—such as the trailer for Alien: Romulus, which, despite its spoilers, heightened audience anticipation—most trailers that reveal too much leave viewers feeling uninspired when they finally see the film.
10 Gandalf’s Return
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
In the first installment of The Lord of the Rings, one of the series’ most poignant moments occurs with the supposed death of Gandalf the Gray, who sacrifices himself during a battle with a Balrog, leaving viewers anxious about his fate. Readers of the book may have known he would return, but the trailer for The Two Towers disappointingly reveals his comeback, showcasing him as Gandalf the White—transformed and more powerful—through a dramatic flash of light.
9 Marcus’ True Identity
Terminator: Salvation (2009)
In the Terminator series, Skynet’s malevolent cyborgs create a relentless war against humanity, which shapes the backdrop for much of the narrative. However, the introduction of a human-cyborg hybrid character who aids John Connor introduces a dramatic twist in Terminator: Salvation. Unfortunately, the trailer spoils this pivotal reveal, showcasing the character’s true identity, thus diminishing the surprise that could have significantly impacted the film’s storyline.
8 Chuck’s Rescue
Cast Away (2000)
Survival dramas such as Cast Away thrive on the tension of uncertainty surrounding a protagonist’s fate. Tom Hanks’ remarkable portrayal of a man grappling with isolation generates genuine anxiety. Yet, the trailer undermines this suspense by displaying scenes of his character, Chuck Noland, interacting with people after his rescue, thus revealing that he ultimately survives.
7 Hostages Watching the Bus Explode
Speed (1994)
Speed presents a gripping premise with a bomb aboard a bus that will detonate if the vehicle slows down. Amid memorable lines and high-stakes action, the trailer reveals a clip of the bus exploding at an airport, inadvertently depicting the successful resolution of the crisis and spoiling the film’s climax. This choice diminishes the impact of the tension that builds throughout.
6 Deckard’s Appearance
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Legacy sequels can successfully expand upon established narratives, as seen in Blade Runner 2049. However, the trailer undercuts a major plot twist by revealing the return of Harrison Ford’s character, Deckard. Anticipation for his dramatic reentry in the film is hampered for those familiar with the promotional materials, stealing the surprise from this significant moment in the storyline.
5 George’s Cancer Goes Into Remission
Funny People (2009)
Funny People, directed by Judd Apatow, centers around a comedian confronting life-altering choices after being diagnosed with leukemia. The emotional weight is significantly diminished when the trailer reveals his eventual remission, which remains a pivotal plot point until later in the film. With its lengthy runtime, the trailer could have omitted this detail, preserving the film’s impactful surprises for viewers.
4 Carrie’s Revenge
Carrie (1976)
The adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie involves intense emotional elements, culminating in the titular character’s powerful revenge against her tormentors. Sadly, the trailer discloses crucial plot points—including her telekinetic powers and eventual payback—blurring the line between intrigue and oversharing, thus lessening the viewer’s engagement with the unfolding narrative.
3 Hiccup’s Mother’s Return in How To Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)
The How to Train Your Dragon franchise explores themes of understanding between humans and dragons. In the sequel, the introduction of a character presumed to be an antagonist is rendered less impactful when her identity as Hiccup’s mother is unveiled in the trailer. This spoiler detracts from the emotional journey that unfolds over the film’s duration, reducing the stakes of her eventual reveal.
2 Harry’s Return
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)
In Kingsman: The Secret Service, Harry Hart’s shocking demise sets the stage for significant character development. Yet, the first promotional material for Kingsman: The Golden Circle reveals that Harry is alive, undermining one of the key emotional beats of the sequel. Director Matthew Vaughn expressed disappointment over this decision, which he believed robbed audiences of a surprising and powerful moment.
“I begged the studio not to reveal it. Because it’s the whole driving force of the first act and if you didn’t know that scene it would’ve made the whole audience gasp. So you have to ask the lovely marketing guys because I think their job is to open the movie and don’t really care about the experience of the movie.”
1 Truman’s Escape
The Truman Show (1998)
Throughout The Truman Show, audiences are drawn into Truman’s journey of self-discovery. However, the trailer inadvertently spoils the iconic climactic moment, where Truman’s escape from the artificial world is revealed. This pivotal scene loses its tension for those who have seen the trailer, but the film still excels in delivering an engaging experience even for those who know how it concludes.
