As many enthusiasts of the Pokemon series are aware, Game Freak endured a significant data breach after an employee inadvertently accessed a malicious email link. This incident unveiled a wealth of details regarding the development of various titles within the Pokemon universe as well as other projects.
Amid the substantial information flood resulting from these leaks, three side projects have piqued the interest of the gaming community. Below are the spin-off Pokemon games unearthed from the Game Freak data breach.
Three Pokemon Spin-offs Uncovered From Game Freak Data Leak
1) Pokemon Rodeo/Synapse
There has been some conflicting information regarding a side project from Game Freak initially identified as Synapse, which was later confirmed to be the codename for Pokemon Rodeo. Recent leaks disseminated by @CentroLeaks indicate that Rodeo was ultimately canceled during its production stage.
Based on what has been uncovered, the concept for Rodeo was intended to be a spin-off game emphasizing battling and multiplayer interactions reminiscent of Splatoon. This title was poised to include cooperative online multiplayer gameplay, likely featuring double battles where pairs of players would engage in combat.
This could have introduced a novel approach to the Stadium series, allowing players to transfer their Pokemon from primary titles to compete in visually advanced games with improved graphics and animations—a concept that has not been revisited since Pokemon Battle Revolution on the Wii.
With the transition to home consoles in the latter part of the seventh generation, Game Freak appeared to pivot away from such spin-off concepts. The absence of a new high-powered Nintendo console for transferring Pokemon rendered this idea somewhat obsolete in today’s landscape.
2) Project Swallow
Another abandoned initiative from Game Freak revealed in the leaks is Project Swallow, which was a mobile title designed as a collection of mini-games similar to WarioWare. Details about this game are still emerging, leaving its overarching objectives ambiguous.
Project Swallow was anticipated to include mini-games featuring various Pokemon from the franchise. One of the known mini-games involved a trio of Magnemites, where players needed to tilt their devices to merge them, evolving them into Magneton. The reasons behind this spin-off’s cancellation remain unclear.
Historically, mobile games in the Pokemon franchise have faced difficulties in achieving lasting success. Although titles like GO and Unite have maintained popularity well past their launch dates, the former was created by Niantic, while the latter is also playable on the Nintendo Switch.
Game Freak likely predicted potential hurdles with Project Swallow, particularly concerning monetization. Given that it was a mini-game collection, the studio would have faced challenges in generating revenue, relying heavily on download fees. Mobile gamers typically favor free titles, which could have posed a substantial risk to the game’s financial performance.
3) Present Party
Another intriguing project was Present Party, a creature-collecting game by Game Freak that focused on toy battles rather than Pokemon, and was seemingly intended for the Nintendo DS. Artwork uncovered suggests that gameplay would revolve around battles between toys manipulated by headset microphones.
This initiative may have faced cancellation for a variety of reasons. Given that many character designs closely resembled actual toy designs, legal implications were likely a concern.
Additionally, Game Freak may have opted against developing this project to avoid competing with its own well-established franchise, as Present Party would have likely been overshadowed by contemporaneous Pokemon titles, such as Platinum and those from the fifth generation.
