These cinematic universes thrive on the charisma of familiar faces to drive audiences into theaters. Occasionally, they even manage to cast the same actor in distinct roles that premiere within a single calendar year, showcasing their tight shooting schedules and versatile talent pool.
It is uncommon for high-profile actors to portray significant characters in both Marvel and DC films within the same year. The intensive shooting commitments typically associated with such roles make it challenging to juggle dual obligations. Consequently, those who successfully manage it are often lesser-known character actors in supporting parts. Despite this, occasionally a household name emerges, delivering performances that resonate with comic book enthusiasts across both franchises in the same year.
1. Randall Park
2018
Randall Park has risen to prominence in recent years, initially captivating audiences with his memorable cameo in The Office, where he assisted Jim in tricking Dwight into believing he had always been Asian-American. Later, Park charmed fans as Louis Huang, the affable father in the acclaimed sitcom Fresh Off The Boat. His increased visibility facilitated dual comic book roles in 2018, as he appeared in both Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp and DC’s debut Aquaman.
In Ant-Man and the Wasp, Park portrays the well-intentioned FBI Agent Jimmy Woo, tasked with monitoring Scott Lang’s adherence to parole. Conversely, in Aquaman, he takes on the character of Dr. Stephen Shin, a marine biologist who finds himself reluctantly aiding the villain Black Manta due to his obsession with Atlantis.
