Kim Woo-bin Reveals Cancer Struggle: “I Was Shocked and Scared” After Learning He Had Just Six Months to Live

South Korean actor Kim Woo-bin’s recent film, Officer Black Belt, premiered on Netflix on September 13, 2024. In his promotional efforts for the movie, he candidly discussed his personal experiences, including his battle with cancer.

Kim Woo-bin was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in 2017, shortly after the release of his acclaimed K-drama, Uncontrollably Fond, where his character met a tragic fate due to cancer. He also appeared in the 59th episode of the YouTube show, Salty Brother Shin Dong-yup on September 16 to further promote Officer Black Belt.

During his interview, Kim Woo-bin recalled the moment he learned he had only six months to live. Although initially devastated and frightened by the diagnosis, he chose to focus on the positives.

“I was so scared when the doctor said, ‘It’ll be six months at the shortest,’ just like in the dramas. I never once thought that I wouldn’t be able to overcome it. Of course, I didn’t think about it right away, but I treated it and pulled myself together with the thought, ‘This is an opportunity.’”

He expressed that he intended to spend precious time with his loved ones and family. Kim Woo-bin characterized his health crisis as a pause that fate provided him to reflect and reconnect.

“I’ve been busy for over 10 years since my debut, so I thought, ‘Maybe heaven gave me this time to look back on myself and spend time with my family.’ It’s the same that my body is having a hard time because of treatment.”he said.

For those unfamiliar, nasopharyngeal cancer is characterized by the development of tumors in the pharynx, which includes vital areas such as the back of the nose, the rear of the tongue, and the larynx. According to Maeil Business Newspaper, there were approximately 340 reported cases of nasopharyngeal cancer in Korea as of 2014. Early diagnosis can lead to a recovery rate of 70-90%.

During his appearance on Salty Brother Shin Dong-yup, Kim Woo-bin expressed heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support from friends and fans during his treatment.

“Just because my face was known, so many people supported me and prayed for me. I believe that strength was truly conveyed to me. Even at the hospital, the progress was surprisingly good. I could see myself getting better. It’s like my heart’s homework to keep this heart well and deliver it well. That’s why I think I’m expressing it more,”he shared.

In Officer Black Belt, Kim Woo-bin portrays the character Lee Jeong-do, who participates in sports such as Taekwondo, Jujitsu, and Kendo to maintain his fitness levels. The film addresses the continuous efforts of parole officers as they work to ensure community safety by closely monitoring released convicts.

In 2015, Kim Woo-bin publicly announced his relationship with actress Shin Min-ah (known for her role in Hometown Cha Cha Cha). Throughout Kim Woo-bin’s challenging journey with nasopharyngeal cancer, Shin Min-ah was seen visiting him frequently at the hospital, offering her steadfast support. The couple has celebrated a decade together and is often spotted enjoying activities like traveling, shopping, and dining out.
