About My Father’s Real-Life Inspirations

This film is rooted in the real-life experiences of Sebastian Maniscalco, particularly his bond with his father, Salvatore Maniscalco. Salvatore emigrated from Cefalù, Sicily to the United States at the age of 15. His mother, Rose Maniscalco, has Italian roots in Naples and Campania as well as Sicily.

Raised in a Roman Catholic household, Sebastian often draws on the influence of his father in his stand-up comedy. In a February 2022 interview with Dolce magazine, he shared insights into the two decades of effort it took to refine his observational comedy style, stating:

“You don’t become a bodybuilder the first day you start lifting weights,” he explains. “Same thing with comedy. You gotta flesh out your joke, your bit. You add and subtract. You see what works.”

In pursuit of his comedy career, Sebastian relocated to Los Angeles in 1998, starting with open mic nights and working as a waiter for seven years to support himself. His career truly took off when he was discovered by Andrew Dice Clay, leading to a successful joint tour.

His rising fame continued with a feature in Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show, and he went on to host the MTV Video Music Awards in 2019.

In addition to his comedy specials and About My Father, Sebastian explored his personal life in the memoir Stay Hungry, published in 2018.

This isn’t Sebastian’s first film with Robert De Niro; they previously collaborated on the Netflix crime drama The Irishman, where De Niro portrayed mob hitman Frank Sheeran, while Sebastian played mobster Crazy “Joe”Gallo.

About My Father is available via Lionsgate Films and can be streamed on multiple platforms.
