“DAMN THE SHADE??” — BLACKPINK’s Jennie Appears to Shade YG Entertainment in Recent Harper’s BAZAAR Interview, Fans React

Jennie Kim from BLACKPINK launched her own company, ODDATELIER (OA), in December 2023 after leaving YG Entertainment. As a new entrepreneur in the music industry, Harper’s BAZAAR recently interviewed the BLACKPINK star, who is set to release her debut solo album in October 2024.

In the interview, Jennie reflected on her experience as a BLACKPINK member, her impact on the fashion scene, and the founding of her company. She also reminisced about her Hollywood debut in 2023, where she portrayed the ambitious character Dyanne in the HBO original series The Idol, alongside The Weekend and Lily-Rose Depp.

Jennie revealed a deep connection with her character Dyanne, stating that she has often encountered individuals trying to manipulate her due to her “super pop star”status.

“I related to Dyanne a lot. Like, a lot. Wanting to become a super pop star is something I could easily just tune myself into. Having the idea of this evil person coming in and trying to manipulate, I’ve been in that world my whole life,”she expressed.

Following these comments, fans speculated that she might be subtly criticizing her former agency, YG Entertainment. One fan posted on X,

“DAMN THE SHADE?? give us names bby and we will ride at dawn.”

Many fans joined the discussion, expressing their disappointment in YG Entertainment for allegedly sidelining the BLACKPINK rapper regarding various opportunities.

“And now she’s (basically) free and it’s her time to shine brighter than before,”one fan remarked.

“YG literally treated Jennie as their cash cow & never let her participate in things she always preferred,”another fan stated.

Many were pleased with her decision to start her own entertainment label, taking charge of her career.

“My baby: (I am just so happy that she is now the CEO of her own company, and it does look like she’s in a better place now,”another fan added.

“If you guys remember the last scene of Dyanne when she was told that her debut would be delayed due to a legal problem despite being promised full legal support. That’s a recurring situation her entire idol life, being promised support only to end up being targeted,”one fan noted.

“Jennie you are doing great to be a superstar. Thank you for debuting @oddatelier. .. love you,”another fan commented.

Jennie Discusses Vaping Controversy and Upcoming Album

In July 2024, the BLACKPINK rapper faced controversy after being filmed vaping indoors in one of her YouTube vlogs. Netizens criticized her for violating safety regulations, as smoking and vaping indoors are strictly prohibited in South Korea. When asked about this during the Harper’s BAZAAR interview, she stated,

“What can I do? If Korean people think it’s wrong, I’ve got to make up for it. It’s like, I get why you guys are upset. It’s cultural, it’s historical. It’s time. And I can’t go against time.”

Jennie also opened up about the challenges to her physical and emotional well-being following years of travel and public events that allowed little privacy. She emphasized her intention to present her true self to the public for the first time through her solo album.

However, she shared concerns about how the public might respond to her vulnerability, noting the importance of her fans accepting her for who she truly is.

“I don’t want to lose their trust. It is so important for me to have my culture and everyone around the world love me. You should be you. It might not seem as glamorous as who you were. Blackpink Jennie will always be a part of me, but you will also get to experience this new side,” she explained.

Concluding her interview, BLACKPINK Jennie hinted that her upcoming solo album will primarily feature English songs. The album is slated for release in October 2024, but specifics such as the release date, title, and tracklist have yet to be disclosed.
