Shogun Wins Best Drama Series and Sets Emmy Records with 18 Total Wins

The FX historical drama series, Shogun, achieved a remarkable feat at the 2024 Emmy Awards, securing a record-breaking 18 wins out of its 25 nominations. Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, the series not only garnered multiple Emmy records but also achieved tremendous success.

This captivating 10-episode series explores a pivotal chapter in the history of feudal Japan, drawing inspiration from James Clavell’s acclaimed novel of the same name. Set against the backdrop of Japan in 1600, it depicts the impending clash of a century-defining civil war.

The show’s synopsis states:

“Lord Yoshii Toranaga” (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.”

Due to its success, the show has been renewed for two additional seasons, which are currently in development. The 2024 Emmys performance has left fans eager for more of this groundbreaking series.

Nominated for 25 awards, Shogun wins 18 Emmy Awards

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, held on September 15, 2024, witnessed FX’s Shogun clinch four prestigious awards. Prior to this, the show had already won 14 awards at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 7 and 8, 2024.

The FX series has broken multiple Emmy records

Heading into the Primetime Emmys, Shogun had already set the record for the most wins in a single season by claiming 14 wins at the Creative Arts Emmy. This was previously held by HBO’s 2008 miniseries John Adams, which attained 13 wins.

This historic run has also surpassed prominent shows like HBO’s Game of Thrones, which won 12 Emmys across three years (2015, 2016, 2019). In the same vein, series like The Crown, The Queen’s Gambit, and Watchmen each achieved 11 wins in one year.

Shogun is now recognized as the first Japanese-language series to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series and is the second non-English-language series to receive a nomination in this category, following the Korean-language hit Squid Game.

Hiroyuki Sanada, who earned the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series, served as a producer for the show. The production team also includes Eriko Miyagawa, Erin Smith, and Tom Winchester. The executive producers are Michaela Clavell, Rachel Kondo, Michael De Luca, Edward L. McDonnell, and Justin Marks.

Directing duties were shared by Jonathan van Tulleken, Charlotte Brändström, Frederick E.O. Toye, Hiromi Kamata, Takeshi Fukunaga, and Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, with Frederick E.O. Toye being awarded for Best Directing for a Drama Series.
