J. Cole vs. Diddy at 2013 VMAs: TDE’s Punch Remembers the Alleged Feud over Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Control’

During a recent episode of the R&B Money Podcast, TDE’s Punch reminisced about the notorious 2013 alleged altercation between Diddy and J. Cole following the VMAs after party. In the podcast’s segment “I Ain’t Saying No Names,”Punch was prompted to share a humorous incident without naming any individuals. He recounted:

“The homie just did this song, right? Pissed a gang of people off. Everybody was mad at it. When the song came out, he was overseas, then he came back to the States. The first place we stopped in was New York City and the first thing we do is say, ‘Let’s go to the club’ because we want to check the temperature, see what everybody was on—L.A. stuff.”

Although Punch refrained from naming Diddy, J. Cole, or Kendrick Lamar, Hot New Hip Hop reported that he seemed to imply that Diddy confronted Kendrick regarding his verse on the song “Control.”According to those reports, J. Cole intervened to defend Kendrick, which allegedly led to a physical confrontation.

Punch described the VIP section of the event as being akin to “the front row of the Grammys,”packed with numerous A-list celebrities. He mentioned that the argument escalated into threats, with one rapper purportedly claiming he would “slit the other’s throat with a bottle.”

He further noted that one rapper punched another, escalating into a brawl between the two. Reports from Hot New Hip Hop indicate that it was Diddy who allegedly made the bottle threat while J. Cole instigated the physical confrontation.

J. Cole Addresses His Confrontation with Diddy in 2021 Track “Let Go My Hand”

Over the years, while J. Cole and Diddy have reportedly had several confrontations, the most notable remains their scuffle at the 2013 VMAs when they allegedly traded blows. Eight years later, J. Cole addressed this incident in his 2021 track “Let Go My Hand,”rapping:

“I kept a tough demeanour on the surface but was mostly just pretendin’. Luckily my bluff was workin’ way more often than not. But sometimes a n***a pulled my card, tryna expose me for fraud. And with my reputation at stake. I was scufflin’ just to save face. Couple wins, couple losses, some broken up too quick to call it.”

In May 2024, both J. Cole and Diddy denied having any ongoing feud. J. Cole addressed the rumors on X, stating:

“People will believe anything.”

In a similar vein, Diddy tweeted:

“I usually don’t address rumours but I got too much respect for my bro @JColeNC. We are friends. The rumours are not true. We had a great party.”

Additionally, in 2021, the two collaborated and shared a video on Instagram where they humorously reenacted their rumored 2013 confrontation at the VMAs.
