Report: Tech Expert Indicates GTA 6 May Not Achieve 4K 60 FPS on PS5 Pro

Sony has taken the gaming community by surprise with the announcement of the PS5 Pro, complete with a substantial price tag of $699, earlier this week. Many GTA 6 fans had hoped that this new console would enable them to play Grand Theft Auto 6 at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second (fps). However, leading tech expert Richard Leadbetter has raised doubts about this possibility. In an interview with IGN on September 13, 2024, the technology editor at Digital Foundry indicated that running GTA 6 at 60fps on the highest graphics settings on the PS5 Pro may be unrealistic.

Leadbetter pointed out that if the standard PlayStation 5 struggles to deliver 60 fps in Graphics Mode, it’s likely that the Pro variant will face similar limitations.

PS5 Pro’s Limitations for Running GTA 6 at 4K 60 FPS are Likely Due to CPU Constraints

Richard Leadbetter elaborated on the PS5 Pro’s specifications, noting that it shares the same CPU as the original PS5, with the majority of improvements focused on the GPU. He referenced a specific PS5 title to illustrate his point, mentioning:

“Space Marine 2 – Performance mode on that on PlayStation 5 doesn’t get near 60 frames per second and it won’t with PlayStation 5 Pro.”

He emphasized that while the graphics are expected to be visually enhanced on the Pro model, achieving 60 fps may not be viable due to the simulation complexity rather than mere rendering issues.

In response to the question of whether the PS5 Pro could support 60 fps for GTA 6, Leadbetter expressed:

“That’s a simulation-heavy game historically, and I would say probably not there, which is probably going to upset a lot of people, but you know every single GTA game has been 30 fps, sometimes struggling to hit 30 fps.”

He warned that if the base PS5 fails to attain 60 fps, the PS5 Pro is unlikely to succeed either, especially if Rockstar decides to enhance the simulation aspects in GTA 6.

Sony’s PS5 Pro was unveiled on September 10, 2024, at an impressive price of $699.99. Its features include:

  • 2TB SSD
  • 2-3x faster ray tracing
  • AI Upscaling
  • PS5 Game Boost Mode
  • Targeting to achieve 60 fps in graphics mode
  • Compatible with all PS5 accessories

While Rockstar Games is highly capable and may optimize GTA 6 to achieve 60 fps on both PS5 and PS5 Pro, there is still time for them to fine-tune the game before its release in the fall of 2025.

Players are encouraged to remain hopeful until actual gameplay footage is revealed for either console.
