Edward Bozarth, who resided on his boat, was found murdered on July 1, 2007, within the engine room of his vessel. His body was discovered by the crew a few days post-murder. Reports indicate that his skull had been bluntly struck, and the cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma.

Upon the arrival of the first officers at the crime scene, they found Ed’s body stuffed in a canvas sail storage bag, a belt constricting his neck, and ropes binding his limbs. Despite the numerous wounds present on his body, the investigation encountered significant challenges as there were no DNA samples or actionable leads found at the scene.

Edward was characterized as a secretive individual who had previously worked for the CIA and DEA and had been deployed on several covert operations, as reported by CBS. Following initial investigations, Denise Bozarth emerged as a prime suspect, especially since she had reportedly left her husband a week prior to his body being found.

Another potential suspect was marine guard Dave Campbell, who reportedly had an intimate relationship with Denise. Investigators soon learned that Ed possessed over $600,000 in a trust fund, which may have provided financial motive for Denise to commit the crime. Additionally, reports suggested Denise sought to divorce Ed.

Even Campbell suspected Denise of being involved in the murder, indicating to authorities that she stood to gain considerably from Ed’s death through inheritance, as reported by CBS.

However, when Denise attempted to shift blame onto Dave, he recounted his frustrations to CBS:

“The very first thing to come out of her mouth was, Dave. That’s when I really got mad. I mean, I really got mad. I said I couldn’t believe she said that. So that’s when I volunteered some information to [detectives].”

Dave Campbell alleged that Denise Bozarth had intended to hire a hitman, offering $10,000 to anyone willing to kill Ed and disguise the murder as an accident. A key witness, Bonnie Colon, also disclosed that Denise frequently expressed her desire to kill Ed and inherit his wealth. She recounted to CBS:

“She would always just tell me things, like, Oh man, I just wish I could kill him. It was like she was almost soliciting it from me. I just brushed it off and said, Oh, let’s go and have fun; let’s not worry about killing anybody; let’s go have a couple of drinks and relax. But she was really intense on it. There wasn’t a day that went by that she didn’t mention killing her husband to me.”

Although Denise Bozarth failed a polygraph test in 2007, law enforcement did not arrest her at that time due to a lack of concrete evidence, including the absence of a murder weapon or DNA traces.

In 2012, however, after further interrogation, Denise confessed to committing the crime, claiming that her husband had assaulted her with a gun, prompting her to kill him by striking his skull with a hammer.

Two years later, in 2014, after her previous confession was deemed inadmissible in court, Denise pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. She completed her sentence and was released in 2024.
