Agatha Harkness is a centuries-old witch with a notable history in the realm of the occult. She was deeply committed to protecting witches from persecution, which led her to assist her coven in combatting the witch hunts that plagued Europe. In the 17th century, she took the lead of the Salem coven but ultimately faced capture during the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Betrayed by her own mother, Agatha had to fight back, resulting in her mother’s death and her own survival.

Later, Agatha Harkness established a mystical town in Colorado called New Salem. There, she married and had a son named Nicholas. Eventually, she chose to leave New Salem behind. In the 18th century, she played a crucial role in training the Daughters of Liberty during the American Revolutionary War.

Agatha Harkness Was Hired As a Nanny by Reed Richards

After the birth of her son Nicholas, Agatha sought to turn away from her witchcraft practices and relocated to Whisper Hill. It was there that Reed Richards and his wife, recognizing the need for a nanny for their baby Franklin, hired Agatha as his governess. Agatha worked diligently to care for the infant while concealing her true identity as a witch. However, when Reed found himself trapped in the Negative Zone, Agatha had to reveal her powers to rescue him.

Throughout her time with the Richards family, Agatha frequently provided invaluable assistance, warning the heroes of ominous threats posed by beings like the Watcher and Overmind. Despite her efforts, she was unable to stop Annihilus from abducting Sue and Franklin into the Negative Zone. With Agatha’s help, the heroes successfully retrieved the two, leading Agatha to serve as Franklin’s permanent nanny until he regained consciousness.

Nevertheless, Agatha withheld information, continuing to train Wanda until her marriage to Vision. Years later, when Wanda was driven mad by an interdimensional entity named Lore, she turned to Agatha for help, as she was the only person she felt she could trust.

Agatha, fixated on the Darkhold—a book of dark magic—became increasingly power-hungry after exploring its perilous spells. Recognizing Wanda’s potential, Agatha decided to infiltrate the community, posing as a friendly neighbor named Agnes. Following Wanda and Vision’s transition into parenthood, Agatha’s true identity was revealed when she ensnared the couple’s children in her schemes, leading to a climactic confrontation between her and Wanda. Ultimately, Wanda seized the Darkhold and ensnared Agatha using the book’s potent spells.
