Enhanced Story Control in Ghost of Yōtei for Players

Sony and Sucker Punch concluded the latest State of Play presentation with the exciting announcement of Ghost of Yōtei, the sequel to the critically acclaimed open-world samurai adventure, Ghost of Tsushima, released in 2020. Set 300 years after its predecessor, this new installment introduces players to an entirely different protagonist, promising unique gameplay experiences and a fresh narrative direction.

During an interview with the New York Times, the developers of Ghost of Yōtei explained that players will enjoy “greater control” over the story of the main character, Atsu, compared to what was experienced in Ghost of Tsushima. While the original game included aspects of choice-and-consequence mechanics, it appears that Sucker Punch is eager to enhance this feature significantly.

Furthermore, creative director Jason Connell emphasized the studio’s commitment to overcoming the challenges of repetitive gameplay often noted in open-world designs. This is a response to criticisms regarding the repetitive nature of some activities in Ghost of Tsushima, such as the golden birds and fox interactions.

Connell stated, “One challenge that comes with making an open-world game is the repetitive nature of doing the same thing over again. We wanted to balance against that and find unique experiences.”

Ghost of Yōtei is slated to be released in 2025 for PS5.
