Rumoured Early Development of StarCraft Shooter Game by Blizzard Entertainment

It has been seven years since the launch of StarCraft: Remastered, eight years since the last expansion of StarCraft 2, and nearly a decade and a half since the original release of StarCraft 2. This prolonged absence has left fans of Blizzard’s iconic sci-fi strategy series eagerly awaiting new content. Fortunately, there are indications that Blizzard might be reviving the franchise in some capacity.

According to journalist Jason Schreier, who recently featured on the IGN Unlocked podcast (as reported by Windows Central), there are whispers about a new StarCraft game in development. During the podcast, Schreier discussed his forthcoming book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, and shared details about this new project.

Schreier indicated that the upcoming game is a shooter spinoff. Earlier this year, Blizzard Entertainment cancelled its survival game, Odyssey, during Microsoft’s initial round of layoffs. Although most of the development team was released, a select few remained and began incubation on a StarCraft shooter. This project is still in the very early development stages and is reportedly being spearheaded by Dan Hay, previously of Ubisoft and a veteran of the Far Cry series.

This isn’t Blizzard Entertainment’s first attempt at creating a StarCraft shooter. The first project was the notorious StarCraft: Ghost, which was announced in 2002 but was not officially cancelled until over a decade later. Additionally, there was a project known as Ares, a Battlefield-inspired shooter that was shelved in 2019.

Whether this new StarCraft shooter will find success where its predecessors faltered remains to be seen, but it is promising that Blizzard is at least making moves to revive the franchise after a long hiatus.

In other StarCraft news, StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection are set to arrive on PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate this November.
