Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Developer Highlights Intentional Xbox 360 Nostalgia Element

The recently launched Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 serves as a nostalgic reminder of the exceptional shooters that dominated the Xbox 360 era. Featuring a robust campaign alongside dedicated co-op and PvP modes, and importantly, without any microtransactions, this title by Saber Interactive has been hailed as an incredible throwback experience—precisely what the developers aimed to achieve.

In a recent interview with Gamesradar, Dmitriy Grigorenko, the game director of Space Marine 2, shared insights about how the game embodies the classic Xbox 360 experience, affirming that it was part of Saber Interactive’s original vision.

“I didn’t know it was that obvious, but that was the intention,” Grigorenko mentioned. “We aimed to create the perfect sequel [to Space Marine] – that was in the original pitch. The ‘perfect sequel’ signifies a game that mirrors the original experience – a 360-style game featuring a narrative campaign, PvP options, and a horde mode to enhance gameplay. We wanted to recreate a classic experience.”

Creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick echoed this sentiment, describing how he experienced Space Marine 2’s campaign reminiscent of his past gaming moments with the Gears of War franchise.

“I recently visited an old friend’s house where we used to enjoy playing all the Gears of War games,” he recalled. “We would spend Friday nights there until we completed the campaign in one sitting. We’d eat, drink, and play together. Just last weekend, I returned to his place, and we played Space Marine 2 from start to finish. It was such an incredible flashback experience!”

Space Marine 2 has garnered praise from both critics and players, achieving over 2 million players shortly after its release. Saber Interactive has also hinted at the possibility of future DLC or even a sequel.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Check out our review of the game here.
