Tony Stark’s Complex Journey: From Iron Man to Doctor Doom in Comic Book Lore

Following the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will take on the role of Doctor Doom, fans have been eager to discover what the comics reveal about Tony Stark’s transformation into this iconic villain.

During the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige provided insight into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The direction of the cinematic universe shifted dramatically after Jonathan Majors was dismissed from his role as Kang the Conqueror due to a domestic abuse conviction. Kang was initially slated to be the main antagonist in the MCU for the coming years, leading to a storyline that would culminate in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Instead of recasting the character, the franchise has opted to eliminate that plotline entirely. Now, Doctor Doom will step into the spotlight as a primary threat, with Avengers: Doomsday taking over from the Kang-focused narrative. What surprised audiences the most wasn’t just the shift from Kang to Doom.

Fans were taken aback when Feige revealed Downey’s casting as Doom. Having previously portrayed Tony Stark (Iron Man) in the MCU, there is speculation regarding a possible connection between the two characters rather than simply ignoring the fact that the same actor is playing both roles. Interestingly, comic lore provides some foundation for a Stark/Doom relationship.

Is there a storyline where Tony Stark becomes Doctor Doom in the comics?

There exists only one comic narrative where Stark transforms into Doom, yet there are other instances where he embodies a villainous persona similar to Doom. The focus among fans has been on the comic What If? Iron Man: Demon in an Armor #1, released in 2010. This story imagines Stark and Doom as university students involved in an experiment that leads to their minds being switched. After the incident, Stark, trapped in Doom’s body, is wrongfully blamed, while Doom, assuming Stark’s form, exploits Stark Industries’ resources to become a wealthy and unscrupulous tycoon.

Nevertheless, this comic does not belong to the main continuity, as the What If? series is dedicated to exploring alternate realities. Furthermore, it seems unlikely that audiences would readily accept such an outrageous body-swap scenario. Conversely, there has been talk about the Iron Maniac, a character strikingly similar to Doom. The Iron Maniac, an alternative version of Stark, first appears in Marvel Team-Up (vol. 3) #2, originating from a devastated Earth-5012. Following the deaths of several fellow Avengers, Stark becomes disenchanted and aggressive, ultimately turning against Reed Richards. This transformation leads him to become the Iron Maniac, donning a Doom-like green cloak and silver armor, while adopting some of Doom’s misguided beliefs that world domination is the only path for humanity.

Additionally, the Iron Maniac eventually crossed into Earth-616, raising the possibility that this alternate Stark could make his way into the MCU. However, presenting this alternate version as Doom instead of a Doom-like character would stray from comic lore. Another example occurs in Iron Man of Exiles #23, where Stark from Earth-42777 becomes a different Doom-like character known as the Iron Monarch, who utilizes his intellect to pursue global dominance. Lastly, the Infamous Iron Man series flips the script, with Doom taking over the Iron Man identity.

In conclusion, aside from the What If? storyline, no comic officially depicts Stark as Doom (at least not in body). However, future developments might alter this narrative. Marvel writer Deniz Camp mentioned that The Ultimates #4 would delve into Downey’s portrayal as Doctor Doom, although many interpreted his tweet as a humorous take on the excitement surrounding Marvel announcements. Since this comic is set for release in September, fans will have to wait to see if it hints at any connections between Doom and Stark.
