That said, if we were to rate merely the finest film appearances, this one would rank much higher. This Christopher Nolan feature concludes his Batman trilogy with a brief yet memorable cameo from Powell.
During a pivotal stock market scene in Gotham led by Bane (Tom Hardy), a young Glen Powell can be spotted seated prominently. His involvement makes us hopeful for a future collaboration between Powell and Nolan. So, if you’re in the mood for a brief glimpse of Glen Powell, commemorate Glen Powell Autumn with The Dark Knight Rises.
9. Red Wing
Glen Powell’s casting in Twisters was thrilling, particularly given his past work alongside Bill Paxton. Both actors shared the screen in the 2013 film Red Wing. And honestly, who can resist seeing Powell in a cowboy hat? It’s just perfect!
Red Wing narrates the story of an orphan’s transformation from naivety to maturity against all odds. Francis finds his long-desired home with help from Maggie.
8. Devotion
The year 2022 truly belonged to Powell in the aviation genre. While Hangman was the standout of summer, he also starred in Devotion that same year. This film revolves around Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors), the first Black aviator, with Powell playing Tom Hudner, Brown’s loyal friend, showcasing their heroic bond during the Korean War.
This production drew inspiration from Adam Makos’s 2015 book, Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice. And for those eager for more aerial excitement, Devotion certainly delivers that thrill!
7. Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over
As a millennial in my 30s, I vividly remember embarking on the Powellnaissance. Seeing Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over as an eleven-year-old back in 2003 was unforgettable. I always wished for Juni and Carmen’s treehouse! The nostalgic magic of this franchise and its impact on my childhood remains.
Powell portrays the Long-Fingered Boy in this film, which captures a unique era. If you haven’t yet experienced this part of cinema history, you’re missing out on a significant component of early 2000s pop culture!
6. Set It Up
Romantic comedies have made a significant comeback, and we can owe much of this revival to Glen Powell. His character, Charlie Young, in Netflix’s Set It Up was a standout. Opposite Zoey Deutch as Harper Moore, the film features one of the most heartfelt lines for anyone who has ever felt a bit too much.
Set It Up is described as follows: “Two overworked and underappreciated assistants concoct a plot to relieve their work stress by setting their bosses up on dates.”
5. Anyone But You
The influx of rom-coms continues! The 2023 film Anyone But You showcases Glen Powell alongside Sydney Sweeney, bringing forth a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, filled with chaos and comedy. One notable scene even features Powell humorously devoid of attire, thanks to an unexpected spider encounter.
In this tale, Ben (Powell) and Beatrice (Sweeney) feign romance at a wedding, and, as any rom-com fan knows, plenty of dramatic hijinks ensue. Let’s also remember Ben’s memorable serenity song!
4. Everybody Wants Some
Glen Powell’s partnership with Richard Linklater resulted in some of his finest work, and Everybody Wants Some is a prime example. If you’re curious about Powell with a mustache, this film is a must-watch! It’s especially delightful for fans of baseball films, establishing itself as one of my top picks.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of the 80s, this college baseball comedy captures the spirit of free-spirited youth as the team indulges in disco nights, discusses Kerouac, and dresses in wild fashions. Everybody Wants Some paints a perfect picture, encapsulating the essence of youthful exuberance with a tagline: “In 1980 Texas, a college freshman meets his new baseball team—an eccentric group of fun-loving, party-happy guys as they navigate the liberation and challenges of unsupervised adulthood.”
3. Top Gun: Maverick
The phenomenon that was Top Gun: Maverick in summer 2022 is undeniable. Many moviegoers returned to theaters post-COVID, and Maverick marked a strong resurgence of the theatrical experience.
As the sequel to the original 1986 film, it introduces a new squad of pilots on a significant mission. Powell embodies Jake “Hangman” Seresin, an overconfident aviator whose scenes are some of the standout moments in the film. If given the chance, I’d happily watch Top Gun: Maverick weekly!
2. Twisters
Some films leave a lasting impact on our lives, and for me, Twisters was one such film. This sequel to the classic 1996 blockbuster Twister brings a unique blend of elements thanks to Lee Isaac Chung’s direction. Powell portrays Tyler Owens, a tornado expert, who falls for Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), embarking on an exhilarating journey together.
Centering around the increasing threat of tornadoes in Oklahoma, the film combines romance and suspense, reminiscent of the original. I adore Tyler Owens’s character, serving as this film’s version of Jo Harding (Helen Hunt). There are so many positive things to say about Twisters, and if you haven’t experienced it, consider yourself missing out!
1. Hit Man
Still captivated by Glen Powell’s Patrick Bateman impression? Hit Man, his latest collaboration with Linklater, creatively adapts the true story of Gary Johnson into a quirky romantic comedy, with some embellishments, of course. It’s a fantastic film that showcases Powell’s talent in portraying a variety of potential hit men.
As Gary meets Madison (Adria Arjona), their unexpected romance unfolds, especially when Gary (as Ron) falls for a woman attempting to hire a hit man. This movie is brilliant in every aspect and undoubtedly ranks among the finest works of Powell and Linklater. In fact, it might just be my favorite film of 2024!
