  • While opinions among fans vary regarding the lighter approach in Gunn’s Superman, the director may adapt tones for various DC films.

In a recent announcement, James Gunn, the director of Superman, shared a first-look image of a beloved character and described how a real-life pet influenced the script’s direction.

This film marks the beginning of Gunn’s DC Universe, introducing a cast of notable DC heroes, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. On the occasion of “Adopt a Shelter Dog”month, Gunn revealed Krypto the Superdog, promising fans a heartwarming companion for the Man of Steel.

Gunn posted the official image of Superman with Krypto on social media, showcasing them on the moon’s surface gazing back at Earth. This snapshot pays homage to a classic comic moment, alongside a personal photo of Gunn and his dog Ozu, who served as the emotional inspiration behind Krypto’s character.

Ozu’s backstory is touching; he was rescued from a hoarding situation where he lived with 60 other dogs. Initially, he struggled to adjust to life with humans, which resulted in some chaos around the house, including the destruction of furniture and even a laptop. Reflecting on Ozu’s challenges, Gunn mentioned, “How complicated would Ozu’s life be if he had superpowers?” This thought led to Krypto’s development in the screenplay, significantly shaping the narrative.

Releasing the photo during #AdoptAShelterDog Month has garnered a positive response from many fans. The cast demonstrated their excitement in the comments, with Merced expressing admiration for Ozu and highlighting Krypto’s endearing floppy ear. Edi Gathegi, portraying Mister Terrific, eagerly hinted at Krypto’s potential to charm audiences, stating, “Krypto is sure to win hearts.” Instagram user @rammerjammer_duck shared a common feeling by declaring Krypto an essential part of the Superman story.

Nonetheless, some fans worry that Krypto’s presence might indicate a shift toward a less serious tone for Superman. Unlike the darker themes prevalent in Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe, Gunn’s take aims to embrace a more vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere. Critics argue that this could render the film and the DC Universe more trivial than they prefer, while others are relieved by the departure from Snyder’s intense style, welcoming Gunn’s penchant for light-hearted elements within Superman’s legacy.

Despite the varied opinions on the tone of the new DC Universe, Gunn has indicated he plans to tailor the mood of each project individually. Superman, as a symbol of hope, is expected to embody a brighter spirit. In contrast, the recently announced Swamp Thing film may adopt a more serious undertone. This flexibility could allow Gunn to set his projects apart from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the previous DCEU in a way that highlights their unique storytelling styles.

The premiere of Superman is slated for July 11, 2025.
