The Evolution of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Title

This rebranding occurred after HBO officially greenlit the series in April 2023, much to the relief of fans who found the initial title cumbersome. In a recent report, The Hollywood Reporter indicated that the series shortened its official title to “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,”although this change could still evolve further.
Currently, the series is titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as opposed to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. This title is not necessarily final, but it reflects the current status of the series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new show is set to feature a reduced number of episodes, specifically six, with Martin assuring fans of a significant tonal shift. It is important to note that the initial seasons of both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon aired with ten episodes each. However, the second season of House of the Dragon was trimmed to eight episodes due to budget cuts implemented by Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns HBO. Consequently, this led to an uneven season that excluded critical battle scenes and felt more like a setup for Season 3 without delivering satisfying results.

There is a strong chance that the final decision-makers may opt for the title “The Hedge Knight,”which aptly reflects the show’s main character. While “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”suggests a noble warrior, “The Hedge Knight”is more concise and intriguing. The protagonist, Ser Duncan the Tall, indeed fits the profile of a Hedge Knight – a wandering knight seeking work without a master.
On Not a Blog, Martin mentioned that no consensus has been reached yet, although both title options are under consideration. On October 10, 2024, he elaborated that this latest Game of Thrones adaptation is based on his novella, The Hedge Knight, which is the first story in his Dunk & Egg series, with sequels like The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight compiled in the collection titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

That’s probably going to be the title of the show as well… unless we go with THE HEDGE KNIGHT. That’s still under discussion. Filming wrapped not long ago, and Ira Parker and his team are now in post, looking toward a debut some time next year. Spring, I am hoping, but that’s just a guess, no date has been set yet.
