The New York Comic Con is currently underway, bringing a wealth of exciting news and updates. The 4-day event kicked off its festivities on Thursday, October 17. Among the highlights, The Mary Sue had the opportunity to attend the panel for the anticipated HBO series, Dune: Prophecy.
In attendance were cast members including Travis Fimmel, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Olivia Williams, Jessica Barden, and Emily Watson, along with showrunner Alison Schapker and executive producer Jordan Goldberg.
The panel featured the premiere of the first full-length trailer, undoubtedly sparking excitement among attendees! In addition to familiar elements, the cast and creators shared insights into what audiences can expect from their characters. Viewers will gain a deeper understanding of the Bene Gesserit’s formation and their operational methods.
A key theme highlighted in the series will focus on how childhood family dysfunction can influence individuals. Olivia Williams, portraying Tula Harkonnen, mentioned that she and Emily Watson (Valya Harkonnen) researched historical figures such as Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots to explore how royal family dynamics can lead to personal turmoil.
As for family connections in Dune: Prophecy, viewers will encounter the Houses Atreides and Harkonnen, along with the introduction of the ruling House Corrino. Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, who takes on the role of Princess Ynez, remarked on the intricate nature of the Corrino family dynamics: “They are incredibly layered characters. There’s a darker side to them… it can pose danger, and people will seek to exploit them.”
An intriguing detail revealed was the substantial use of practical effects in the show. In an era dominated by green screens, it’s thrilling to discover that the scope of Dune: Prophecy relies heavily on these tangible effects. While green screens have their advantages, the authenticity of on-screen visuals enhances the immersive experience, particularly in a rich universe like Dune.
When pressed for details about the main threat featured in the series, the creators chose to keep that under wraps. However, this only heightens my anticipation. With the themes of spice, sandworms, and family dysfunction, I’m all in! Be sure to tune in when the show makes its debut on November 17 on HBO and Max.
