Anderson .Paak Expresses Love for BTS at K-Pops Premiere During TIFF 2024

Anderson. Paak’s new film, K-Pops, made its debut at the 49th annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 6, 2024. This movie represents the directorial debut for the talented American musician and songwriter. On September 9, Anderson. Paak graced the red carpet at TIFF 2024 alongside his son, Soul Rasheed.

During his red carpet interview, the eight-time Grammy Award-winning artist expressed his admiration for BTS, giving a heartfelt shoutout to the globally celebrated group.

“I mean they’re all my favourite. But a big shout out to RM, you know we got some music together. That’s my boy. Suga! But I love the whole group, man!”he exclaimed.

The father-son pair also performed in the film, which boasts several iconic cameos and features collaborations with BTS’ SUGA, SEVENTEEN‘s Vernon, BIGBANG‘s G-DRAGON, Jessi, Crush, and The Rose.

Anderson. Paak Finds Inspiration for K-Pops in BTS

The uplifting family comedy K-Pops features an ensemble cast including Yvette Nicole Brown, Jonathan “Dumbfoundead”Park, Jee Young Han, Kevin Woo, Cathy Shim, along with Paak’s own son, Soul Rasheed. The film was co-written and produced by the Grammy-winning artist, who infused his own Korean heritage into the storyline.

Anderson. Paak shared that during the COVID-19 lockdown, he discovered his family’s passion for Korean pop music, especially BTS, which sparked the idea for the film.

Inspired by these experiences, Paak began crafting a script about a musician who learns he has a long-lost son poised to become a K-pop star. He then approached his 13-year-old son, Rasheed, about taking on the lead role. In a September 9 interview with Deadline, Paak said,

“I was very inspired by hanging out with my son and his mom, who were very much into K-pop and the group BTS. And I was like, ‘Okay, you know about BTS? But what do you know about BET?’ And then they began to introduce me to many things about K-pop and took me to the concerts, and I got really into it.”

For those unfamiliar, K-Pops follows Anderson. Paak as a faded and disgraced BJ who takes on a role in a South Korean pop talent competition. There, he discovers Rasheed (played by his son), a teenage contestant who turns out to be the son he never knew he had.

In related news, BTS members Namjoon, Suga, j-hope, Jungkook, Jimin, and Taehyung are currently fulfilling their military service and are expected to return in June 2025. Meanwhile, BTS’ Jin was discharged on June 12, 2024, and is set to release his solo album by the end of the year.
