Donald Trump’s Controversial Transphobic Remarks on America’s School System: “What’s Wrong with Our Country?”

Donald Trump holds some unusual views regarding education and schooling. He vowed back in September to eliminate the Department of Education, claiming this would “prevent the misuse of taxpayer funds to brainwash America’s youth with messages that many parents oppose.” By this, he refers specifically to LGBTQ+ educational content and the truthful exploration of America’s history of racism.

Trump hasn’t provided a clear outline of his subsequent plans after dissolving the Department of Education. In fact, his agenda seems sparse—mainly filled with elements of racism, misogyny, and transphobia. Speaking of which, he has displayed a stark fixation on the unfounded assertion that schoolchildren are receiving sex-change operations while at school.

In a typically scattered and vague address at a Bronx barbershop last week, Trump repeatedly mentioned the “Department of Education” as if trying to underscore a point. He proclaimed, “I talk about reading, writing, and arithmetic. No transgender, no operations. You know, they take your child. There are instances—your boy leaves school and comes back a girl, OK? Without parental approval. What on earth is that supposed to mean?”

So, what exactly is that all about? No institution in the United States, or anywhere else for that matter, would take a child in, perform life-altering surgery, and then send them back home. The logistics simply don’t support it! Does Trump genuinely imagine that schools are equipped with surgical facilities and medical teams concealed in the basement? It appears he doesn’t rationalize any thoughts at all. His mindset seems clouded by hatred. The more concerning reality is that his followers are swallowing these fabrications, believing that children are lining up for gender reassignment surgery at schools. While it may seem absurd to entertain, this is the current climate.

Trump has shared this falsehood multiple times and it is incredibly exhausting. At a rally in Wisconsin back in September, he made a similar statement, “Can you picture being a parent and your son departs for school after you tell him, ‘Jimmy, I care about you greatly, enjoy your day,’ only for him to return having undergone a major operation? Can you even contemplate that? What is so wrong with our nation?” Indeed, what is wrong? Trump and the Republican party have yet to provide a single verified instance of a child receiving surgery at school, because it simply doesn’t happen.

Such comments lead many to question Trump’s mental readiness for presidential duties. He often delivers drawn-out, nonsensical speeches, sways to rhythms while he should be addressing issues, and believes schools are conducting surgeries on students. It’s truly bewildering that some individuals still want to see him return to the Oval Office.
