Charlamagne tha God, the well-known radio host, couldn’t hold back his laughter as Lara Trump, co-chair of the Republican National Committee, ridiculously claimed that her father-in-law has no racist inclinations during a segment on Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club” this past Monday. This assertion stands in stark contrast to a significant amount of evidence, stretching back to the 1970s, which tells a very different story.

Lara Trump boldly stated, “When he was in the White House, Donald Trump greatly benefited the Black community. I have never heard him say anything racist.” This prompted hearty laughter from Charlamagne, who responded to her inquiry about his amusement by saying, “It’s comical because people behave as if Google doesn’t exist, or like we no longer have television or radio.”

The history of Donald Trump’s racial insensitivity dates back over fifty years, from the 1973 lawsuit from the Justice Department concerning housing discrimination, to his recent dubious remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris, labeling her as “mentally unfit” and “low-IQ” —statements that echo deep-rooted, racist stereotypes about the intelligence of Black individuals.

Charlamagne confronted Trump squarely, questioning her about the repercussions of her father-in-law’s statements: “How can you expect Mexicans and Muslims to overlook a lot of the harmful rhetoric he has directed at them that has painted them in a villainous light?”

Although Trump highlights initiatives like the First Step Act and minimal funding support for HBCUs, his political rhetoric often employs coded racist language, questioning Barack Obama’s origins. This is the same individual who took out full-page newspaper advertisements in New York to demand the death penalty for the now-exonerated Central Park Five, a stance he clings to even after their wrongful conviction was overturned.

To clarify, suggesting that having Black acquaintances or supporting particular policies absolves someone of a long history of overtly racist behavior neglects the complex nature of racism. It is possible for someone to cultivate superficial relationships with individuals of color while still perpetuating damaging racist ideologies and practices.

This intense discussion follows a recent town hall event hosted by Charlamagne with Vice President Harris, who is actively enhancing her outreach strategy to communities of color. Despite earlier critiques aimed at the Democratic leadership, the radio host and author has now rallied behind Harris since her nomination.
