‘Degrading’ Claims by ‘One Tree Hill’ Star Against Creator Mark Schwahn for Punitive Storylines

Bethany Joy Lenz has released a memoir titled Dinner For Vampires, where she discusses her challenging experiences while working on the set of One Tree Hill. The series was created by Mark Schwahn, who faced career downfall in 2017 after numerous allegations of sexual misconduct against him came to light.

Entertainment Weekly has shared insights from the book. While Lenz does not directly name Schwahn in her writing, her references are unmistakable. She recounted that Schwahn created a hostile environment for her, retaliating with problematic storylines whenever she opposed his vision for her character, Haley James Scott.

“The more I expressed my personal beliefs and preferences, the more he integrated elements into the storyline that I believe were intended to belittle or provoke me,” Lenz claimed. “For instance, having other characters refer to Haley as ‘fat’ or portraying her as ‘overreacting’ to her high school boyfriend watching adult content.” The comment about her character’s body image is particularly harsh, highlighting the struggles young women face regarding self-esteem in the public eye.

Schwahn is among the many figures who faced repercussions due to the #MeToo movement, which brought significant attention to issues of sexual harassment and misconduct. His actions were first publicly addressed by One Tree Hill writer Audrey Wauchope, who took to Twitter in 2017 to share her experiences of mistreatment alongside her writing partner, Rachel Specter. “At times, we didn’t have the fortune of escaping his presence; he would intrusively squeeze himself between us, attempting to initiate unwanted physical contact,” she revealed.

These allegations prompted the leading actresses and crew members of One Tree Hill, including Lenz, to collectively condemn Schwahn in an open letter. They described feeling subject to treatment that varied from deeply distressing to outright illegal. Furthermore, some expressed experiencing situations where they felt physically threatened. This troubling environment clearly continues to haunt Lenz.

Lenz expressed that the porn storyline was particularly challenging to address given Schwahn’s influence. She felt it was “degrading and detrimental to the young women who admired me,” yet Schwahn refused to amend it. As a result, Lenz decided to alter her own dialogue, which led to confusion and frustration for the director and colleagues. “It was distressing for everyone involved. I felt terrible, but I felt there was no other option available to me,” she explained.

In addition to her experiences on One Tree Hill, Dinner For Vampires delves into Lenz’s past involvement with a cult, drawing parallels between Schwahn and her cult leader referred to as “Les.” She asserted that both individuals “isolated young, impressionable individuals from their support systems and coerced them into compliance.” Fortunately, Lenz managed to escape from the cult, and Schwahn no longer holds power within the television industry. This narrative serves as a powerful reminder of the challenges women continue to confront in the entertainment sector. Although the landscape has improved since the onset of the #MeToo movement, much work remains to be done.
