During their formative years at the Shinigami Shin’Ou Reijutsu Academy, Shunsui Kyoraku and Juushirou Ukitake trained under the esteemed Captain Shigekuni Genryuusai Yamamoto. Their paths crossed during a training exercise, where Captain Retsu Unohana quickly identified their exceptional skills. After an intense sparring match that ended in a stalemate, Juushirou invited Shunsui to his favorite candy shop, where he shared treats with his five younger siblings. This gesture solidified their friendship. Subsequently, Juushirou confided in Shunsui about his illness, revealing that he was the vessel for Mimihagi, a remnant of the Soul King Adnyeus. Shunsui, determined not to lose his friend, vowed that Juushirou would not meet an early demise.

I watched over you as if you were my own children. I believed that even if our paths were different, it was acceptable as long as we walked them together.

Their journey continued as both graduated with distinction, eventually assuming leadership positions within the Gotei 13—Shunsui leading Squad 8 and Juushirou commanding Squad 13. Along with Yamamoto and Unohana, they stood out as some of the oldest and most formidable members of the organization. Their prowess was further underscored by their dual Zanpakutou capabilities. Shunsui wielded Katen Kyokotsu, while Juushirou utilized Sogyo no Kotowari, with both weapons manifesting as two identical blades—a testament to their extraordinary capabilities. The only other dual Zanpakutou wields was Ichigo’s Zangetsu, which symbolizes his Hollow and Quincy heritage.

When tensions rose during the Soul Society arc, Kyoraku and Ukitake were among the first captains to sense the impending turmoil. They strongly opposed the decision to execute Rukia Kuchiki, considering her innocent and a member of Ukitake’s own squad. This personal connection drove Ukitake to act, especially upon recognizing the resemblance between Ichigo Kurosaki and his deceased vice-captain, Kaien Shiba, convincing him of the need to support Rukia. Kyoraku stood firmly alongside his friend, agreeing that the execution was unwarranted.

The two captains confronted their mentor and beloved figure, Head Captain Yamamoto, in a bid to persuade him to halt Rukia’s execution. Yamamoto referred to them as his sons, which led fans to often describe Kyoraku and Ukitake as “brothers,”highlighting the depth of their bond. They later faced off against Primera Espada Coyote Starrk during the Fake Karakura Town arc.

Kyoraku and Ukitake frequently enjoyed drinks together, sharing their thoughts on the conflicts they navigated and discussing their ally, Ichigo. Juushirou played a crucial role in officially designating Ichigo as a Substitute Shinigami, while both captains regarded Ichigo and his companions as integral allies to the Soul Society.

The friendship between Shunsui Kyoraku and Juushirou Ukitake is not only a source of strength for them but also a defining aspect of their legacy within the Gotei 13. Through Ukitake, Ichigo gained official acknowledgment from the Soul Society, and thanks to Kyoraku, Ichigo’s human friends had access to the Seireitei in the event of Ichigo’s absence from the Human World. As the last representatives of a bygone era in Soul Society’s history, Kyoraku stands alone in the most recent developments of the plot.
