This past fall, while Smile 2 and Terrifier 3 dominated the box office, I’ve found myself eagerly anticipating another horror sequel. I’m specifically referring to Scream 7, which is still some time away from its theatrical debut. Early October brought exciting news with the announcement that Scream 7 is set to hit theaters on February 27, 2026. Learning about Neve Campbell’s return as Sidney Prescott fuels my anticipation for what this slasher franchise will deliver next. Amid the many horror final girls, Sidney stands out due to her compelling backstory, her ties to Ghostface, along with her ability to embody positivity and resilience. While Ghostface is an iconic menace, the genuine character progression of Sidney is something I truly appreciate.
Although many shifts have occurred since the initial project announcement, I’m still confident in the beloved reputation of this slasher series. However, there’s one particular aspect of Scream 7 that’s causing me some concern and I feel it needs discussing.
My Concerns About One Aspect of Scream 7
On October 24, 2024, Patrick Dempsey was featured on the TODAY show discussing Scream 7. As one of the many fans invested in the series, I’ve been eagerly waiting to find out if Dempsey will return as Mark Kincaid, Sidney’s partner. His remarks sparked my interest further. According to Deadline, he stated:
“I’m waiting on the script. There has been a conversation about it. I haven’t seen anything yet. So, we’ll see what happens.”
When Al Roker posed a question about his interest in reprising the role, Dempsey remarked:
“I mean, you know, it’s always good to have a job.”
This statement raises red flags for me, especially since Dempsey mentioned he is “waiting”for the Scream 7 script while the filming is slated for December 2024. Does this imply that the screenplay may not yet be finalized? Given that Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera were originally cast as sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter but have since exited the project, it indicates a draft exists somewhere along the way. Yet, significant rewrites will likely be necessary now that two key characters are no longer involved. Although I’m optimistic a polished script will emerge before filming, it is indeed surprising that with December almost at hand, Dempsey has yet to receive a copy of the screenplay.
I’m speculating that Kevin Williamson, who recently took over the directorial helm from Christopher Landon, might be revising the script or crafting a new one entirely. While this speculation remains unverified, it’s certainly a plausible scenario. Williamson’s history with the franchise includes writing the original Scream, its sequel, and Scream 4, so he brings a wealth of experience. It’s always fascinating to hear insights from the creative minds behind the series, whether they are discussing Scream 6 or any other horror venture.
What I Am Looking Forward to in Scream 7
The anticipation for Scream 7 is palpable for me as I truly appreciate the unique blend of humor and horror that the series delivers. I’m curious to see which legacy characters might return, with Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) being a strong contender. Above all, I am eager to discover the latest happenings in Sidney Prescott’s life and how she will confront Ghostface yet again. Additionally, I’m interested in learning more about her family dynamics and how they will integrate into the evolving narrative.
I’m certainly not alone in my excitement; fans are ecstatic to see Sidney back in action. Neve Campbell herself has shared her enthusiasm, telling People in June 2024:
“I was really grateful that they came back to me in a respectful way. I think that means a lot to women and to society. I’m grateful to be able to step into Sidney’s shoes again and tell her story.”
While I remain curious about Patrick Dempsey’s comments on the Scream 7 script status, I genuinely believe that this upcoming slasher installment will be exceptional. I can hardly wait for February 2026 to arrive.
