In a recent discussion panel, yet another former aide of Donald Trump voiced concerns over the ex-president’s mental health and hazardous ideologies. With the election just days away, numerous prior Trump staffers have stepped forward to caution Americans—especially those in the Republican party—about the implications of supporting Trump, emphasizing the significance of this decision.
During the CNN segment responding to Hillary Clinton’s remarks regarding the election, she noted that Trump has become “more unhinged, more unstable” compared to past campaigns, mentioning his confusing speech patterns and failure to adequately address questions. Sarah Matthews, a former White House press aide who was part of the panel, echoed Clinton’s sentiments, stating that Trump “isn’t the same person” she once assisted.
“Something within him fractured after the 2020 election,”she remarked. “His inability to accept that defeat led him to start unraveling.” While Matthews initially supported Trump during his 2016 campaign as an outsider, she observed that by 2020, voters had become disheartened with his performance during his initial term.
“In 2020, it was clear that the American electorate chose to reject him, and now, in 2024, he’s fixated on revenge and retribution,” Matthews stated. Trump’s tendency toward divisive language and attacks on his detractors has intensified lately, setting him even further apart from his challenger, Kamala Harris.
Matthews commended Harris for distinctly presenting herself in contrast to Trump, with the message, “he keeps a list of enemies while I have a list of tasks to accomplish.” Highlighting the key differences, Matthews noted, “Her focus is on solutions, whereas he is consumed with trivial disputes and seeking vengeance.”
It’s significant that, as the election approaches, an increasing number of Republicans, particularly former aides of Trump, are publicly supporting Harris. Recently, Trump’s ex-chief of staff, John Kelly, shared his troubling observations about the former president’s inclination towards authoritarianism in various news reports.
Kelly acknowledged that Trump “certainly leans towards a dictatorship style of governance,” elaborating on Trump’s concerning admiration for Nazi military leaders. He recalled a time when Trump expressed his respect for the loyalty of “German generals,” and Kelly interjected, “Are you referring to the Kaiser’s generals? Surely you can’t mean those of Hitler?” Ultimately, however, Kelly’s good faith was met with Trump’s affirmation, “Yeah, yeah, Hitler’s generals.”
While Trump may wish to dismiss Kelly as merely a disgruntled ex-employee, Kelly’s statements garnered support from a group of 13 former Trump aides, including Sarah Matthews, in an open letter to the electorate.
“The distressing truths General Kelly revealed are both alarming and shocking,” the letter stated. “However, those of us who know Trump, having worked with him, are unfortunately not surprised.” The letter warned about “the perilous consequences of a second Trump term,” and recognized the unusual nature of their position. Although the 13 individuals identified themselves as “lifelong Republicans,” they acknowledged, “there are pivotal moments in history when putting the nation above party is essential. This is one of those times.”
