‘Elon Musk’s Election Season Love: Playing Border Patrol Amidst His Own Illegal Layover’

Hypocrisy is encapsulated in Elon Musk. Recently, the business mogul has aligned himself with Donald Trump and many of his policies, positioning himself staunchly against the idea of “open borders.”

The contradiction arises from Musk’s journey to his immense wealth, which began while he was living in the U.S. without legal status. In 1992, Musk immigrated to the United States to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in physics and a Bachelor of Science in economics. Subsequently, he gained acceptance into a graduate program at Stanford University in 1995 but never completed his enrollment. Matters became complicated: as reported in The Washington Post, it was uncovered through legal documents and correspondence that Musk remained in the U.S. unlawfully after failing to enroll in school.

Instead of pursuing his studies, Musk ventured into entrepreneurship by launching a start-up called Zip2 with his brother. Concerns were raised among investors about his potential deportation due to his precarious visa situation. In 1999, Zip2 was sold for an impressive $330 million, which later positioned Musk as an early investor in Tesla. Legal professionals have indicated that international students are prohibited from dropping out of school to start a business or work, regardless of compensation.

The Post cited Leon Fresco, a former immigration litigator for the U.S. Justice Department, who noted, “If you engage in any activities that promote income generation, like writing code or making sales, that can lead to serious ramifications.”

Times Have Shifted

Fast forward to the present day, and Musk, who boasts a staggering net worth of $274 billion, has been actively campaigning alongside Trump, advocating against “open borders.”It’s ironic that a person who has immensely prospered (in a way few can imitate) from his undocumented work is now reinforcing barriers that make it increasingly difficult for other immigrants to achieve the “American Dream.”

Immigration has emerged as a frequent topic of discussion for Musk on X, the social media platform he acquired in 2022. At that time, he proclaimed it would be free of political bias.

As the election approaches, Musk’s posts have taken a more political slant according to Bloomberg News. The report reveals:

“In 2024, immigration and voter fraud have become Musk’s primary topics of discussion and engagement, accumulating around 10 billion views. Musk has made over 1,300 posts on these issues, with more than 330 in just the past two months.”

One should not underestimate Musk’s influence on social media. Bloomberg stated that he is the most significant figure on the platform, with reports indicating he has instructed engineers to amplify the reach of his posts. He has made multiple unfounded accusations against the Democrats and Vice-President Kamala Harris, claiming they facilitate illegal immigration to manipulate elections.

This scrutiny has rekindled attention on Musk’s past and immigration status during the ’90s. President Joe Biden called out Musk’s duplicity, stating, “The richest man on Earth was once an illegal worker in the U.S. He was meant to be enrolled in studies under a student visa but wasn’t and was, therefore, violating the law.”

Biden also criticized Republicans and Trump for their approach to border issues, noting their failure to propose solutions to “the border crisis.” He asserted that border crossings have significantly decreased during his administration. Based on insights from the Peterson Institute for International Economics, if Trump were to win the upcoming election, he plans to undertake the largest scale of deportations in U.S. history. Musk, having once been in a similar situation as an alleged illegal immigrant, would likely endorse this approach.
