Unfortunately, this perceived tranquility shatters as her town and dearest friend fall victim to a horde of golems.
As destruction looms, Yuno is rescued by Soujirou, a peculiar yet formidable character wielding a training sword and labeled as a visitor—individuals summoned to this world to become vital heroes. Motivated by a desire for excitement and formidable foes, Soujirou appears indifferent to the surrounding devastation, prompting Yuno to decide to accompany him, secretly wishing to witness his downfall.
The initial episodes of Ishura deliver a captivating yet harrowing narrative, but its erratic storytelling might feel overwhelming and disconnected. Bursting with action, the anime presents a high-energy dark fantasy with a diverse array of characters that it eventually introduces. This decision leads to him adopting a bird (Pii-chan) that turns out to be a mage from another world, and it turns out Sasaki harbors a knack for magic himself.
Shifting between Earth and Pii-chan’s magical realm, Sasaki and Peeps ingeniously blends numerous themes, successfully managing to create a cohesive narrative that interweaves humor, drama, and elements of political intrigue, making it quite ambitious for an isekai.

Among the highly-anticipated new isekai anime of Winter 2024 is Tales of Wedding Rings. The seinen manga, now nearly a decade old, has achieved a reasonable degree of success given the niche appeal of harem stories. Some may recognize Princess Krystal featured in promotional content, as she has been heavily marketed as one of the prominent faces of the Winter season.
This anime merges the elements of fantasy and romance while spinning a tale of Haruto, who embarks on a journey to another realm in search of the love of his life, only to discover she leads an existence far removed from his wildest fantasies. This adaptation is satisfactory, but enthusiasts of harems and fantasy tropes will likely appreciate it most.
The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic

Is there anything more uncomfortable than being a third wheel? Usato experiences a unique version of this situation when he is unwittingly summoned to another realm alongside his two heroic friends. Thrown into a perilous universe that seems to have no use for him, Usato’s sole lifeline is his ability to wield healing magic, which ultimately brings him trouble as it catches the attention of Rose, a strict instructor determined to bring Usato up to speed.
As one of the standout isekai series of Winter 2024, The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic is exceptionally enjoyable. It incorporates some of the season’s finest comedic moments while still allowing its central character ample room for development. However, the latter part of the series loses some of its initial charm as the focus leans more heavily into action sequences.
Fluffy Paradise

Not every isekai anime revolves around action, adventure, and romance; at times, the intent behind exploring another realm is for personal tranquility. Fluffy Paradise offers a predominantly slow-paced narrative centered around an overworked individual reborn as a girl in a magical world. Having a deep affinity for animals, she wishes for a power that allows her to communicate with them, embarking on a quest to befriend and care for every creature she encounters.
While predominantly situated in the relaxing slice-of-life genre, Fluffy Paradise intermittently reveals some of the kingdom’s less than savory rulers. As a result, the series isn’t entirely warm and fuzzyl, even though that description holds true for the majority of its scenes.
Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I’m Not the Demon Lord

The trend of villainess isekai anime has exploded in recent years, a shift that is unsurprising given its popularity within the light novel domain during the 2010s. Nowadays, it seems each season features at least one series in this subgenre, with Villainess Level 99 fulfilling this role for Winter 2024. In a refreshing take, the protagonist reincarnates as a secret boss from an otome game rather than its final antagonist; thus she finds herself immensely powerful yet is erroneously labeled as the Demon Lord due to her ebony locks.
In line with the conventions of this genre, Villainess Level 99 holds true to many familiar tropes while presenting a fascinating twist. Set largely in an academy with a lead character seeking a tranquil life, the series is predictable yet retains an element of charm. Yumiella Dolkness’ dry comedic delivery adds levity to various situations, and her exaggerated antics remain memorable throughout.
The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash

Following the loss of her sole supporter, Ivy bravely ventures forth alone, ultimately befriending a slime.
For viewers seeking a more vulnerable protagonist navigating her limited skills and resources in a harsh environment, The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash is a fine selection. While it contains several intense moments, the series is also filled with slice-of-life segments. Additionally, as the narrative does not prominently feature Ivy’s isekai origins, it could easily pass for a conventional fantasy tale.
Isekai Onsen Paradise

Arguably the most under-the-radar isekai anime of Winter 2024, Meitou “Isekai no Yu”Kaitakuki revolves around the charm of hot springs. Yoshizou Yukawa thrives on immersing himself in the natural warmth of onsens, dedicating his life to exploring the hot spring gems found throughout Japan. Unfortunately, a terrible fall ends his life abruptly—until he is revived in a fantasy realm that caters to his passion.
Not surprisingly, Meitou contains a fair amount of fanservice, considering it’s an isekai centered around the soothing experience of hot springs, and Yoshizou certainly won’t be indulging alone.
Re:Monster
Spring 2024
The isekai genre is often criticized for its repetitive nature, which is why a show with a relatively unique premise can be refreshing. Re:Monster cleverly shifts the focus to a protagonist who reincarnates as a goblin, an intriguing concept given that these creatures are seldom portrayed positively in fantasy narratives.
Staying true to its source material, Re:Monster embraces a dark fantasy theme, presenting a lead character who, while somewhat despicable, evolves into a more honorable version of a goblin or ogre. By consuming the remains of defeated beasts, Rou absorbs their abilities, which quickly renders him overpowering compared to his peers. In no time, he rises to a position akin to a king, overshadowing both his allies and adversaries. Naturally, this leads to a harem dynamic involving Rou, female goblins, and women from the human realm who initially find themselves as captives, which may raise ethical questions for some viewers.
A Salad Bowl Of Eccentrics

A rarity in the genre, A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics is a reverse isekai following two young women—a princess and her knight—who escape to Earth to evade death. Upon arrival, Sara (the princess) befriends a private investigator, while Livia (the knight) falls into homelessness, ultimately becoming an unsuspecting savior for a cult. The series is filled with humor reminiscent of the beloved Hinamatsuri.

Amidst powerful titles like Mushoku Tensei and KonoSuba, most newcomers struggled to get attention. Yet, aside from A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics, Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers stood out as one of the season’s finest new offerings, largely credited to its central duo: Flio and Fenrys.
Summoned from a parallel world rife with discrimination, Banaza is called upon by a kingdom seeking warriors but, deemed powerless, is sent to his doom. Luckily, he manages to evolve, bestowing him with boundless abilities that quickly make him the strongest protagonist among Spring 2024’s isekai. In addition, he forms a pretend marriage with a demon named Fenrys, leading to an adorably lighthearted relationship, largely free of stress.
While it contains some action, Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers primarily emphasizes a gentle narrative focusing on romance and camaraderie.
The New Gate

The New Gate presents an intriguing premise, providing a fun spin on the isekai formula. The narrative begins with protagonist Shin, already ensnared in a perilous game, facing off against the final boss to secure freedom for himself and the other players. However, this victory thrusts him into the future of the game, where he retains his formidable strength and embarks on a quest to forge a new life.
The source material is notable for its extensive world-building and dives into slice-of-life storytelling, given that Shin is so powerful he rarely encounters challenges. However, the adaptation might rank among Spring 2024’s most forgettable isekai offerings, often attributed to Shin’s rather easygoing demeanor—he appears unfazed by his extraordinary situation or the drastic time jump. While this may detract from the thrill of the story, it isn’t inherently detrimental.
The Strongest Magician in the Demon Lord’s Army Was a Human

The Strongest Magician in the Demon Lord’s Army Was a Human has seen success across multiple formats, including novels, light novels, and a 2019 manga that continues to yield content. While not outright terrible, the slate of isekai anime for Summer 2024 lacked a standout title that would define the season, excluding the reappearance of That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime. Suicide Squad Isekai seemed particularly poised to fill that void, buoyed by its promising premise and the involvement of Wit Studio, coupled with writing from the author of Re:Zero. Conceivably, this strange Warner Bros. production could have culminated in a gloriously fun superhero-themed saga, liberally sprinkling absurdity throughout its narrative.
However, Suicide Squad Isekai simply falls into the realm of mediocrity. While it stands among the more notable isekai titles of Summer 2024, it also represents one of the season’s most disappointing efforts. The anime doesn’t endeavor to distinguish itself from similar series, relying on a lackluster fantasy backdrop and inconsistent battle scenes, albeit buoyed by an engaging ensemble of anti-heroes who share solid chemistry. All DC characters are afforded moments to shine, even though Harley Quinn seems to dominate at times.
Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells

Starting with undertones reminiscent of Arifureta and My Instant Death Ability, Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells initially appears to be a standard isekai anime, albeit with its own charm. A goddess summons a full classroom of students as heroes; sadly, Mimori’s powers are so minuscule that he’s deemed useless and promptly dispatched to a perilous dungeon. However, unsurprisingly for those acquainted with isekai conventions, Mimori’s unconventional powers ultimately create the biggest advantages, and he enters into a partnership with an elf.
Likely, Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells may not cater to those uninterested in isekai elements (and “isekai trash”may not be a derogatory term here); yet, it shines as an engaging guilty pleasure. Mimori’s growth from “weak”to “capable of obliterating armies with ease”is both predictable and entertaining. Intriguingly, his quest for vengeance against the goddess adds depth, portraying the latter as amusingly nefarious.

Complicating matters is his relationship with NPCs who remain oblivious to their game-like existence, leading to humorous complications as he befriends a local girl.
This anime tastefully integrates gaming elements within its fantasy narrative, with scenes depicting Haga engaged in grinding to activate specific bugs. The animation studios Palette and 100studio are relatively new to the industry; however, they have produced decent isekai anime, such as The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat and KamiKatsu. Quality Assurance largely continues this trend, with its debugging premise serving as a highlight while maintaining quality throughout other aspects.
Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools

Additionally, the series utilizes stiff animation paired with minimal movement. While it’s true that the anime may be operating on a constrained budget, limiting the creative scope, it nonetheless risks being forgotten amidst a genre already brimming with similar stories.
Plus-Sized Elf

Summer 2024’s only reverse isekai anime, Plus-Sized Elf, is upfront about its intentions. The narrative revolves around Naoe, a massage therapist dedicated to motivating Erufuda, an elf, to maintain a healthy lifestyle while resisting the allure of Earth’s delectable fast food. With her ability to return to her world contingent on preserving her weight, Erufuda faces significant challenges; however, Japan’s culinary offerings prove all too tempting.
Plus-Sized Elf is an ecchi comedy tailored to a specific audience. It’s refreshing to witness diverse body types represented in anime, even if the portrayal predominantly caters to fetishistic views. Platforms like HIDIVE have recently been ramping up options for risqué shows needing unrestricted streaming, and Plus-Sized Elf fits neatly with other 2024 titles such as Gushing Over Magical Girls and Chained Soldier.

The latter episodes of the season introduced a few standalone narratives that revolved around world-building and character-focused stories involving otherworlders, which turned out to be by far the best features of the anime. An additional season would be a splendid treat.
I’ll Become a Villainess That Will Go Down in History

The lead character dreams of abandoning her life to become Alicia, the villainess from an otome game; fortune smiles upon her when an accident grants her this wish of inhabiting Alicia’s form. Seizing the chance to excel in her newfound villainous role, she prepares for what appears to be an unpleasant fate for Alicia.
As another entry in the otome villainess subgenre, I’ll Become a Villainess That Will Go Down in History presents a commendable contribution. Containing a well-received light novel and manga adaptation, despite not being widely recognized outside Japan, the anime unfolds predictably yet remains predominantly enjoyable. In contrast to other villainess narratives focusing on redeeming the character’s negative reputation, Alicia actively endeavors to excel as the best villain possible. However, her ineptitude at fulfilling this role leads to endearing interactions with her family and the main male lead. Despite eliciting a few laughs, it culminates in a storyline that adheres to the genre’s typical narrative arc.
Loner Life in Another World

Loner Life in Another World appears poised to evoke polarized reactions, even more so than its light novel counterpart. Arguably, the adaptation stirs even greater divisiveness than the original work, especially concerning humor. Haruka, the lead, possesses an incessant chatter that forms part of his comedic charm, though reactions to his musings often vary. When the jokes fall flat, entire episodes feel extended as every moment becomes packed with unending dialogue.
While this sentiment applies broadly to many shows, Loner Life in Another World necessitates a viewing experience to arrive at a fair opinion. Comedy is inherently subjective, and this series’ unique humor might not resonate with all viewers. A couple of episodes will suffice for distinct audiences to gauge their appreciation for the anime.
Demon Lord 2099

This one is a bit complex to categorize. Technically, Demon Lord 2099 is a reincarnated narrative, as the lead awakens in a future iteration of his realm. However, during his extended slumber, his world amalgamated with that of Earth, generating a setting rich with humans, fantasy races, and eventually cyberpunk elements. The titular Demon Lord finds himself in a brand-new world forged from the remnants of his former existence, exposing him to an entirely alien environment. Thus, Demon Lord 2099 represents a reverse isekai.
While the other two new isekai anime from Fall 2024 are solid, this series emerges as an invigorating standout, boasting a captivating launch. Veltol, the Demon Lord, deviates from the usual extraordinarily strong lead found in most of these titles, as his powers feel quite ordinary in light of the advances in the world and a lack of followers. His delightful bond with Machina, his most dedicated subordinate navigating life in this new reality, adds to the charm. Observing the fusion between classic fantasy tropes and a dynamic cyberpunk backdrop delivers significant entertainment value.
Special Mention: Dragon Ball Daima

Does this fit the genre? Dragon Ball has long been affiliated with world-swapping escapades, as showcased prominently in the Frieza saga set on Namek. Characters such as Goku and Vegeta venture into extraterrestrial domains, exploring Majin Buu’s setting in DBZ’s latter stages. Yet, none of these narratives can genuinely be classified as isekai until the inception of Daima.
This series exhibits numerous traits typically associated with the genre. Both Goku and the Supreme Kai traverse to an alternate dimension through a convoluted mechanism, resulting in their forced relocation. The Demon Realm presents formidable barriers, with entry seemingly reserved for non-citizens, making transit arduous. Though the realm bears some resemblance to other alien landscapes, it boasts a distinct ecosystem, politics, and character.
Is Dragon Ball Daima a true isekai? Perhaps not definitively, but it certainly deserves mention in this context.
2024 Isekai Anime Sequels
KonoSuba, Re:Zero, & More
While 2024 promises a plethora of exciting new isekai anime, the sequels are commanding a significant spotlight this year, with returning series often overshadowing new entries—especially in Spring and Fall 2024. On the other hand, Summer 2024 saw no sequels, save for That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, which began its run in Spring. The newer titles, though not entirely overlooked, are frequently eclipsed by the well-established properties, particularly within the isekai genre. There’s a solid rationale behind this phenomenon: shows that secure continuations generally outshine the average isekai offering.
When addressing the most notable isekai anime sequels of 2024, selections primarily revolve around tonal preferences. Although lacking the stringent world-building elements associated with Mushoku Tensei or Re:Zero, KonoSuba season 3 managed to deliver more laughter than almost any other series within the isekai domain, making it challenging to rival for pure comedic value. Meanwhile, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime returned for a season perceived as possibly its most contentious due to a pivot toward political narratives. Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy- performed reasonably well, even if it doesn’t share the same cultural footprint as some of the more established series in the genre.
