Fact Check: Taylor Swift’s Impact on Voter Registrations for Kamala Harris – Over 400,000 Registrations Explained

Social media is ablaze with the claim that more than 400,000 new voter registrations for the 2024 US Presidential Elections originated from a link shared by Taylor Swift on Instagram.

On September 10, 2024, the popular artist shared an extensive caption alongside her Instagram post, endorsing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz for the upcoming US Presidential Elections on November 5, 2024.

In the latter part of her post, Taylor Swift urged all Americans to register and vote for their preferred candidates after conducting thorough research. She also included a custom URL in a follow-up Instagram story, directing her followers to the official voting website vote.gov.

According to a spokesperson from the GSA, as reported by Reuters, a total of 405,999 individuals clicked on that custom link within the 24 hours that her Instagram story was live. This information has been widely misinterpreted online, leading many to assert that over 400,000 individuals registered via Taylor Swift’s link.

The custom link is managed by the US General Services Administration (GSA) and does not directly register voters. Instead, it redirects users to their state election websites, as official voter registration is conducted by individual states.

Therefore, it is erroneous to conclude that over 400,000 people registered to vote based on this data. The accurate statement is that 405,999 individuals clicked on Taylor Swift’s custom link in her Instagram story.

While the GSA cannot confirm how many of the 405,999 visitors actually registered to vote, it estimates that over 27,000 new registrations were completed through the website on September 11. Additionally, more than 80,000 individuals verified their registration status on the same day.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk swiftly reacted to Taylor Swift’s Instagram endorsement of Kamala Harris, focusing on her description of herself as a ‘Childless Cat Lady’—a reference to JD Vance’s remarks about Kamala Harris in a 2021 interview. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on September 10, Musk wrote:

“Fine Taylor. .. you win. .. I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life.”

This comment attracted significant backlash from the public, including criticism from Musk’s estranged daughter, Vivian Wilson. She took to Instagram Threads to label Musk’s response as “heinous incel nonsense.”

“I saw ‘the tweet’. Heinous incel nonsense is, in fact, heinous incel nonsense. I don’t really have anything to add to it; it’s just abhorrent. That much is obvious, and if you don’t see how, then you’re part of the problem,”Vivian posted.

In her subsequent post, she continued:

“I would just like to say to my audience members, don’t let people talk to you like that. It’s disgusting, belittling, and incredibly sexist. You deserve better.”

Vivian Wilson is one of Elon Musk’s twelve children. The relationship between the 20-year-old and the Tesla founder has been strained since she filed a petition to change her name and gender in June 2022.
