The incident happened on September 4, 2024, after Reece witnessed a car crash in which two men fled the scene, leading to the police mistakenly identifying him as involved in the incident.
In the video that Reece Richards posted on Instagram, he faced threats from an officer wielding pepper spray who ordered him to stay in place. Numerous fans and notable celebrities, including Beverly Knight, Layton Williams, and Billy Luke Nevers, expressed their outrage in the comments of the post, supporting the actor.
Beverly Knight criticized the Met Police, while Layton Williams urged authorities to rectify their error:

In his Instagram account detailing the alleged unlawful arrest and police misconduct, Reece Richards described himself as a victim and noted that the incident occurred just a few yards from his home. He emphasized:
“I’ve heard stories about incidents like this, but I never imagined it would happen to me. This is my story.”
Reece recounted finishing a performance in the musical Hairspray when he saw a car crash nearby. He noticed two men running away, with one heading directly toward him.
Realizing the police were pursuing the men, Reece attempted to direct them, but despite this, he was confronted by an officer who claimed he was under arrest and ordered him to lie on the ground.
Describing the subsequent moments, Reece detailed being pepper-sprayed, forcefully brought to the ground, and handcuffed. He recounted:
“In a flash, I was face-down on the pavement with multiple officers holding me down, forcing my head into the ground. I was already injured from the show, but having four officers on top of me worsened my injuries to my back, ribs, and stomach. I couldn’t see anything, but I could hear my mum nearby, screaming and crying, begging them to let me go.”
Reece mentioned that he asked his mother to call the director of Hairspray, Brenda Edwards, who arrived at the scene within 20 minutes. He claimed that Brenda’s presence shifted the police officers’ demeanor, and they ultimately agreed to release him after reviewing body cam footage.
At the conclusion of his account, Reece Richards disclosed that he has filed a formal complaint with the Met Police and the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct). In his Instagram caption, he expressed gratitude to those who supported him and vowed not to rest until he fully understood what occurred. He ended on a compassionate note, stating he is “deeply saddened for anyone else who has been through this.”
