A Guide on Changing Genders in Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley offers an inclusive gaming experience with its two-gender character creation system. The differences between male and female farmers are minimal, primarily consisting of distinct dialogue options and pronouns chosen by non-playable characters (NPCs). In this charming farming simulation, players are free to romance all eligible characters, regardless of their farmer’s gender, fostering a truly open and accepting gameplay environment.

Players have the flexibility to choose any hairstyle or color, emphasizing that gender selection ultimately comes down to personal preference. However, it’s common for players to wish for a change in their character’s gender over time. Luckily, there is a straightforward process for making this alteration within the game.

In Stardew Valley, the subtlety of gender differences can lead to amusing scenarios, such as players accidentally discovering they are playing a character of a different gender than initially intended. Such revelations often occur when interacting with romantic interests, highlighting how gender is conversationally layered rather than structurally segregated. Regardless of these minor confusions, players can enjoy full engagement with the game’s mechanics—marrying, having children, and engaging in all forms of gameplay without gender barriers.

For players wishing to change their character’s gender, there is good news: changing your gender is attainable for 500 gold at The Shrine of Illusions, located in the Wizard’s Tower basement. This feature was introduced during the game’s Update 1.5 in 2020. However, players must complete certain preliminary steps before they can change their gender.

Building a Friendship with the Wizard

To facilitate a gender change in Stardew Valley, players must first gain the Wizard’s friendship. The Wizard resides in the tower located in Cindersap Forest. To access his tower, players can pursue one of these two options:

  • Read the golden scroll located in the Crafts Room of the Community Center.
  • Obtain a membership at JojaMart.

After completing either of these tasks, the Wizard’s Tower will become accessible, allowing players to visit him daily (except on festival days) from 6 AM to 11 PM. Establishing a good rapport with the Wizard can expedite the friendship process; his preferred gifts include the Book of Mysteries, Purple Mushroom, Solar Essence, Super Cucumber, and Void Essence.

Once the tower is open, players can start befriending the Wizard. Achieving a relationship level of at least four hearts unlocks a visit to the Shine of Illusions located in the Wizard’s basement. This enchanting shrine allows players to modify their farmer’s appearance, select new colors, and, most importantly, change their gender in Stardew Valley.
