About the Novel Behind A Mistake (2024)
A Mistake (2024) is an adaptation from the novel by Carl Shuker, first published in 2019. The book was nominated for the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction at the 2020 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards. One judge noted:
“A Mistake is a masterful dissection of truth and fallibility, hubris and high-minded sexism, in the form of a literary thriller. This sharp-eyed, sharp-elbowed tale combines an astute understanding of medicine and its political dynamics with exceptional storytelling.”
Carl Shuker began his writing career in 2005 with the release of his debut novel, The Method Actors, a thriller and love story set in Tokyo’s darker corners at the dawn of the 21st century.
In 2006, he released The Lazy Boys, exploring themes of nihilism and toxic masculinity within New Zealand’s rugby culture. His notable works also include the 2011 short story collection Three Novellas for a Novel and the 2013 novel Anti Lebanon.
A Mistake (2024) is currently screening in theaters across North America.
