Essential Insights
- Digital artist BossLogic portrays Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern in imaginative fan art.
- Pierre is set to take on the role of John Stewart, alongside Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan in the upcoming Lanterns series.
- The casting of Pierre has received enthusiastic feedback from fans.
Recently, Aaron Pierre was officially cast as John Stewart in the DCU’s Lanterns series, and fan-favorite digital artist BossLogic has brilliantly visualized what the actor could look like in the renowned Green Lantern suit.
Last week, Warner Bros. confirmed Pierre’s role as John Stewart in the new Green Lantern series, while also revealing that Kyle Chandler will portray Hal Jordan. This announcement came after previous reports indicated Chandler was in discussions for the role. With filming for Lanterns not slated to begin until early next year, the studio is taking its time when it comes to showcasing Pierre and Chandler in their superhero attire. Thankfully, talented artist BossLogic stepped in to provide fans with a sneak peek of their interpretations of the characters.
In the artwork shared by BossLogic, Pierre is depicted as Green Lantern / John Stewart, complete with the signature costume and a Green Lantern ring, using his powers to form a weaponized construct. Green Lantern Corps members can manifest any object or weapon through their willpower alone, with the ring projecting vibrant green energy. BossLogic expressed: “I just want to see the dope constructs!”
The reactions from fans concerning Pierre’s casting have been overwhelmingly positive. One user commented, “@eldorado4: ‘He’s a phenomenal actor and perfectly suited for the role. It’s one of the best casting decisions I’ve seen in a long time.’” Another fan, tagging DCU’s James Gunn, urged, “@jamesgunn please give the fans this, Homie @bosslogic getting down.”While expressing hopes for a gritty tone in the Lanterns series, @hydro88wr commented, “I want the show to be as nuanced and intense as Peacemaker. The Green Lantern representation in films has been quite soft.”
This concern is certainly valid. The success of John Stewart’s character in the animated series Justice League Unlimited helped popularize him among audiences beyond the comic book realm, but the live-action portrayal of Green Lantern has often missed the mark. Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern film is notorious for its lackluster box office performance and poor critical reception, something Reynolds himself has publicly ribbed. Although Zack Snyder attempted to introduce John Stewart in his Justice League director’s cut, featuring Wayne T. Carr for a brief scene, Warner Bros. had other plans for the character, ultimately replacing Stewart with Martian Manhunter.
The forthcoming Lanterns TV series is set to explore the dynamic between Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they solve a compelling mystery on Earth. With past adaptations not hitting the right notes, fans have heightened expectations for these characters. However, considering Pierre and Chandler’s impressive acting credentials, there’s reassurance that these beloved Green Lantern roles will be skillfully portrayed.
Lanterns is currently in the pre-production phase at DC Studios.
