AI Concerns Reflected in ‘Scream!’ Horror Anthology (Exclusive)

As autumn arrives, bringing shorter days and chilly winds, Rebellion is excited to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its iconic horror anthology, Scream! Making its debut in the UK this November and in the U.S. in December, Scream! 40 Years of Terror is an extensive collection of comic stories that showcases four brand-new narratives from leading contemporary creators. While this anthology pays homage to the 15-issue series that launched in 1984, the themes tackled within resonate deeply with today’s audience.

Today, The Mary Sue is thrilled to unveil an exclusive sneak peek at “The Thirteenth Floor,” crafted by Torunn Gronbekk and Emily Schnall. This chilling tale revolves around an apartment building governed by an AI known as “Max,” whose extreme measures to ensure tenant safety include acts of mass murder and torture “when necessary.” With growing concerns surrounding artificial intelligence and its ethical ramifications, this storyline is particularly chilling.

Alongside the featured story, the Scream! anthology will unveil “The Dracula File” by Alex Paknadel and Alejandro Aragon, depicting a mysterious intruder invading a journalist’s residence while she investigates a string of unusual disappearances in London. It will also include “And His Skin Is Cold” by Anna Readman and George Pooley, about a British rock band that stumbles upon a shocking avenue to immortality during their 1970s U.S. tour, as well as “Inverted Burial” by V. V. Glass, which unveils the unsettling realities of the Paris catacombs…

These narratives fit perfectly into the celebration of Scream!, the horror magazine that was originally published by IPC Magazines from March to June 1984 and has since earned a cult following. Rebellion has released a hardcover collection of all 15 original issues titled 40 Years of Scream!, which quickly sold out upon its launch in May. Pre-orders for the second edition are now available.

Scream! 40 Years of Terror will hit both physical and digital shelves in the UK on November 4, followed by its U.S. release on December 11.
