Since its launch, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has taken the community by storm, largely due to its numerous quality-of-life enhancements. However, a particular aspect continues to frustrate players: the fossil-selling mechanics. While turning fossils into a profitable exchange is appealing, the current system can feel clunky and somewhat disheartening.
A Reddit user known as MonoPeter recently sparked meaningful conversation regarding this issue in a post titled “I wish we could sell fossils to Blathers!”Their argument centers around the notion that Blathers, the museum curator, would likely cherish these fossils far more than the Nook brothers, Timmy and Tommy. Though Blathers accepts fossil donations enthusiastically, he rarely, if ever, buys duplicates for personal enjoyment.

MonoPeter’s observations address the somewhat tragic reality of Blathers’ situation. Their proposed solution involves introducing a daily or weekly opportunity for players to sell fossils directly to Blathers. This change would fulfill the curator’s desire for fossils while still keeping the Nook twins in the purchasing loop.
A Wish Among the Community: Blathers as a Buyer
Engaging Blathers as a Purchasing Middleman
MonoPeter’s sentiments resonate widely within the community, as many commenters express support for the idea. Suggestions for potential selling systems have emerged from other users, like zephyrine_rain, who advocates for introducing this feature after players have unearthed every fossil available. Meanwhile, Renegade_451 proposes a similar system to that of Flick and CJ’s trading of bugs and fish, reminiscent of options featured in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
In a wonderfully generous gesture, Creativered4 expressed willingness to donate all fossils to Blathers if the game allowed it. Even for those less inclined to offer gifts, it is clear that making the fossil-selling process more efficient would enhance the gameplay experience by streamlining the exchange and eliminating the need to repeatedly go back and forth between Blathers and Nook’s Cranny.
Our Perspective: Common Requests Across the Franchise
Shaping an Already Great Franchise
While wanting Blathers to buy fossils is a prevalent desire, it’s far from the only request fans have. Players have highlighted several appealing features from Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp that they wish were present in New Horizons, such as more interactive villager-decorating mechanics. Other gameplay elements, like crafting, could also benefit from refinements.
As a long-time fan of Animal Crossing: Wild World, my personal hope rests on seeing a return to the diverse personalities and atmospheric depth characteristic of earlier titles. Nevertheless, I’d continue to support the franchise regardless of these tweaks. Blathers, as a character, holds a special place in my heart, and I wholeheartedly welcome any enhancements—like the proposal to allow fossil-selling—to enrich interactions in future games beyond Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
