Apex Legends Removes Support for Linux: All the Details You Need to Know

In a recent update shared on X by the official Apex Legends account, it was revealed that Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts (EA) have made the decision to terminate support for the game’s Linux operating system compatibility. This alteration will impact not only players using Linux on their PCs but also those attempting to play on a Steam Deck that runs the Linux OS.

This article delves into the reasoning behind the discontinuation of Linux support for Apex Legends.

Reasons Behind the Discontinuation of Linux Support for Apex Legends

According to the developers’ official communication, they have identified the Linux operating system as a significant avenue for cheaters and hackers to exploit vulnerabilities in the game. The inherent accessibility and flexibility associated with Linux systems make it easier for these individuals to create codes that can evade anti-cheat mechanisms, notably EA’s proprietary Easy Anti-Cheat.

As stated in the developers’ blog:

“To eliminate this cheat vector, we have made the decision to prevent access to the game for Linux users. This means that Apex Legends will be unplayable immediately for those running this operating system. Playing on handhelds, such as the Steam Deck, is still possible if the user opts to install Windows.”

The challenge of identifying and banning players who develop and utilize cheats on Linux has proven difficult. The developers noted a concerning increase in cheat activity originating from Linux users. To mitigate further incidents, the decision was made to block access for this user base.

This alteration will also impact those utilizing the Steam Deck for gameplay on Linux. Although this change predominantly affects a niche segment of the overall player community, developers assert that the new policy will “meaningfully reduce instances of cheating in our game.”

As of now, this decision is already in effect, and any players using Linux to access Apex Legends will find their capabilities revoked. It’s important to note that users playing on Steam or any sanctioned platform will not be impacted by this change. Steam Deck users can still enjoy Apex Legends by installing a Windows OS on their devices.
