Apple TV+ Cancels Time Bandits: One-Season Journey Comes to an End

It has been confirmed by Variety that Time Bandits season 2 will not be happening, as Apple TV+ has officially canceled the renewal of the series after just one season. The announcement came unexpectedly within a month following the conclusion of its first season.

Based on Terry Gilliam’s film of the same name, Time Bandits was among the most highly-anticipated shows set to premiere on Apple TV+ in 2024. Featuring a notable cast that includes industry giants such as Taika Waititi and Lisa Kudrow, the series had all the potential for success but ultimately did not achieve a second season.

As of now, Apple TV+ has not provided explicit reasons for the cancellation. Nevertheless, it may relate to recent reports indicating that Apple TV+ is reducing its spending amidst a shift in content strategy. Continue reading to find out more.

Time Bandits reboot concludes after a single season

Apple TV+ has faced criticism for overspending on its quality-driven originals, leading to anticipated budget cuts as the platform recalibrates its focus. According to Bloomberg in July 2024, Apple has committed billions to its original productions and has received favorable recognition for its efforts, due to the strong audience response and numerous accolades.

However, Apple TV+ is generating significantly less revenue compared to major competitor, Netflix. While it hasn’t been conclusively announced that the cancellation of Time Bandits season 2 is directly tied to budget constraints, the prevailing reports suggest this is a significant factor.

Despite this setback, the adaptation of Time Bandits has been well-received, boasting an impressive 80% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While it may not surpass the leading titles, the reboot still stands as a worthy addition that resonated with fans of the original film and celebrated the unique artistry of Terry Gilliam.

Iain Morris, one of the showrunners, discussed the reboot’s ability to engage new audiences in an interview with Variety, stating:

“I think ‘Time Bandits’ is actually almost the lost classic. You mention it to a lot of people and they’ve never heard of it, but you meet other people and it’s their favorite film.”

He further elaborated:

“But they are quite rare. So if you’re bringing these brilliant ideas that people have and these brilliant worlds, and expanding and changing and introducing them to a new audience, I think it’s great. Some of the best songs ever made are cover versions.”

The plot of Time Bandits revolves around a group of thieves who come into possession of a magical map that enables them to travel through both space and time. When the Supreme Being becomes furious over the misuse of the map, a quest ensues for its recovery.

Throughout their adventures, the thieves encounter Kevin, who eventually joins their eclectic team, leading to a series of incredible escapades.

Time Bandits debuted on July 24, 2024, with a special double episode and continued to release new episodes in pairs weekly. The first season wrapped up on August 21, 2024.
