Arcane, the animated series inspired by the popular game League of Legends, has garnered massive success. However, recent analyses suggest that the success of the show has not translated into anticipated financial gains for the game itself. As one of the leading competitive online multiplayer games, League of Legends boasts a vast and active community of players along with an extensive lore that includes multiple spin-off ventures.

Arcane premiered its first season on Netflix in 2021, followed by a second season in 2024. The show explores the contrasting worlds of Zaun, a gritty underbelly, and the affluent city of Piltover, encompassing the dynamics between them. Focusing on beloved characters like Jinx, Vi, and Caitlyn, the series also features other champions from League of Legends, drawing in a wider audience. However, despite this buzz, the game’s metrics reflect a different story regarding financial gain.

A recent report from Bloomberg reveals that, although the production of the two seasons of Arcane incurred costs of around $250 million for Riot Games, there was little to no increase in player numbers for League of Legends. Netflix reportedly compensated Riot $3 million per episode, while Tencent Holdings added another $3 million for the rights to stream the show in China—this total barely covers half of the show’s production expenses. Furthermore, the rapid release of the first season limited the time League developers had to introduce new game content, leading to temporary player growth that ultimately did not result in retention. Nonetheless, a spokesperson from Riot stated that “while the show itself wasn’t profitable, it added to the business in other ways.”

While the first season of Arcane may have lacked synchronization with in-game content, the creators managed to allocate more preparation time for the second season. Consequently, the League of Legends game received notable updates, including the release of new skins—most famously, the highly discussed $250 cosmetic for Arcane Fractured Jinx, as well as refreshed visuals for the character Viktor, reflecting his portrayal in the series. Additionally, the popular game mode ARAM received a thematic enhancement to tie in with the Arcane aesthetic.

Moreover, the introduction of two new champions, Ambessa and Mel, has been confirmed, with Ambessa already launched on November 6 and Mel’s debut anticipated for February 2025.

As Arcane moves forward after the story arcs of Jinx, Vi, and Caitlyn, plans are in place to expand its narrative scope to include other significant regions such as Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia. In the meantime, the latest League of Legends patch, 14.24, was released on December 10, encompassing balance changes as well as new content inspired by the Arcane series.
