Rapper Eve recently revealed that after the release of her debut album, Let There Be Eve… The Ruff Ryders First Lady, in 1999, she received a call from rapper Jay-Z. While congratulating her, he allegedly advised her not to get overly excited, mentioning that female rappers “don’t really excel in the industry.”
In an interview with The Times on September 16, 2024, Eve candidly discussed various situations she encountered in the music industry and shared details about her upcoming memoir, Who’s That Girl?, slated for release on September 17, Tuesday. Throughout the interview, she reflected on her experiences and criticized the misogynistic practices prevalent in the industry.
During the interview, the rapper elaborated on several key points, including the famous day her first album was released.
Following the release of the interview, social media users flocked to Instagram to express their reactions. Some defended Jay-Z, arguing that the incident occurred a long time ago and suggesting that Eve should move on. Conversely, others voiced their desire to see Jay-Z face consequences.
Additional supporters of Jay-Z emerged, sharing comments in his favor.
In contrast, a segment of netizens backed Eve and criticized Jay-Z for his comments.
Eve Discusses Jay-Z’s Misogynistic Call and Her Memoir
Eve shared insights about her upcoming memoir, Who’s That Girl?:
“I’ve written a f*cking book. It’s crazy. I was nervous initially about putting all this stuff out there, but I wanted to be open and vulnerable.”
She elaborated that the memoir details various experiences from her career in the music industry, including a chapter titled The Laziest Stripper at the Club, where she discusses her early days in the business.
Eve reiterated the conversation she had with Jay-Z post the launch of her debut album, labeling his comments as misogynistic.
She also touched upon a scandal from her past involving a leaked s*x tape by her former partner and shared a harrowing story about a mob wife offering to “make it disappear.”Additionally, she opened up about an incident regarding her DUI arrest.
Further discussing her memoir, Eve noted:
“There have been lots of ups and downs. [Writing] this book was a purge but it’s also about celebrating being in a good space now. I feel like I can talk about the things that happened to me in a peripheral way because it all worked out.”
The release of her book and the interview coincided with Eve’s announcement about being appointed as a Scholar-In-Residence at NYU for the year. According to HipHopDx, Dean Jack H. Knott of the Steinhardt school expressed:
“We are thrilled to be hosting Eve as our 2024-25 Scholar in Residence…. I know our students and faculty will learn from her engagement and support of our efforts to advance equity, belonging, and innovation.”
Additionally, Eve shared on Instagram on September 12:
“I am thrilled to announce I will be joining the 2024-25 Scholar-in-Residence at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. My year-long residency kicks off September 21 with a welcoming event at NYU….”
As of now, following the interview, Eve has not provided any further comments.
