Overview of the Momentous Game Award Win
- Nicolas Doucet, director of Astro Bot, was taken by surprise when the game clinched the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2024.
- Prompted by the earlier win for Best Game Direction, Doucet started drafting remarks for a potential acceptance speech.
- Members of Team Asobi in Japan celebrated Astro Bot’s victory, with lead designer Hiroaki Yatoku repeatedly reliving the award announcement.
In an unexpected turn of events, Astro Bot, developed by Team Asobi, was named Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024, leaving director Nicolas Doucet and his team astonished. Team Asobi’s developers in Japan expressed immense joy and excitement, particularly that many from the team managed to catch the live segment celebrating their achievements.
Initially launched on September 6, 2024, Astro Bot serves as a sequel to the critically acclaimed 2018 title Astro Bot Rescue Mission for PlayStation VR and 2020’s Astro’s Playroom, which was pre-installed with the PlayStation 5. The game not only garnered significant acclaim but also became the highest-rated PS5 title of the year. By December, it secured a nomination for Game of the Year alongside notable competitors such as Balatro, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and Black Myth Wukong.
Despite the general anticipation in the industry, Doucet did not foresee the remarkable accomplishment of winning the Game of the Year award. However, after receiving the Best Game Direction award—an impressive indicator of the game’s quality—he began to mentally prepare a speech on his smartphone for the upcoming awards segment. When Astro Bot was ultimately declared the Game of the Year, Doucet experienced a moment of disbelief, quickly scanning the room for fellow Team Asobi members in attendance, including lead sound designer Junko Sano. Overwhelmed by the win, he later remarked on how little he remembered about the award ceremony due to the shock he experienced at that moment. In contrast, Sano felt elated; for her, the win represented not only a recognition of their hard work but also a rewarding culmination of positive reception from fans. Reflecting on her long-standing career in the Japanese gaming industry, she was inspired by the presence of many Japanese games nominated alongside Astro Bot.
Team Asobi’s Delight at Receiving GOTY Award
Expressing his joy, lead game designer Hiroaki Yatoku echoed Doucet’s sentiments, highlighting that witnessing the team’s rapture was a profound moment for him. As developers in Japan tuned in to the livestream of the awards, the excitement crescendoed as they realized Astro Bot was being celebrated on such a prominent stage. Yatoku, like Sano, hadn’t focused on the awards while working on Astro Bot, and he found himself captivated by the replay of the pivotal moment.
Overall, Astro Bot has distinguished itself among the top titles of 2024, boasting impressive critical ratings of 95 on OpenCritic and 94 on Metacritic. The platformer also garnered additional accolades, winning Best Family Game and Best Action/Adventure at The Game Awards 2024, alongside Best Game Direction and Game of the Year.
