Tony Hinchcliffe’s disparaging remarks about Puerto Rico are facing backlash not only on social media but also from celebrities of Puerto Rican heritage.
During a ‘roast’ at Trump’s Madison Square Garden event on October 27, Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage.” This comment was part of a routine that drew upon racist stereotypes about various racial minorities.Hinchcliffe hit hard on these offensive tropes in his performance.
The Puerto Rican community, along with many Latinos, were deeply insulted by the news. Aubrey Plaza, whose grandparents hail from Puerto Rico, delivered a strong rebuttal to Hinchcliffe. While speaking at the Innovator Awards in New York, she stated, “I’m glad my sweet abuelita didn’t hear such a disgusting comment. But had she been with us, I am sure she would have said to Tony Hinchcliffe, ‘Go fuck yourself.’” Plaza encouraged the Wall Street Journal to “quote her” on that remark.

Campaign manager for Trump, Danielle Alvarez, stated that “This joke does not represent President Trump or the campaign’s views.” However, Trump has yet to comment on Hinchcliffe’s statements. His running mate, JD Vance, dismissed the outrage, suggesting people should “stop getting so offended.”
The Trump campaign has been courting Latino voters, while simultaneously airing Spanish-language advertisements warning against non-citizen voting. Following the racist remark at Madison Square Garden, it is evident that Trump’s strategies have hit a snag.
