Balatro has recently indicated a desire to collaborate with the popular action-RPG, Path of Exile 2, which launched its early access version to much acclaim. This follows a series of successful collaborations Balatro has had with hit titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Among Us, and Vampire Survivors, enhancing its narrative-rich gameplay with themed content.
This indie title, created by the dedicated solo developer known as LocalThunk, has garnered remarkable success since its launch in February 2024. Already, Balatro has surpassed 3.5 million copies sold across various platforms, including console, PC, and mobile. Furthermore, the game has been recognized with numerous awards, famously sweeping The Game Awards 2024 by winning accolades such as Best Debut Indie Game, Best Indie Game, and Best Mobile Game. Recently, Balatro hinted at the potential for a collaboration with Path of Exile 2, especially after the latter made headlines for a humorous in-game incident involving Elon Musk.
In a recent tweet, Balatro revealed that it ranks among the top five games played on the Steam Deck, alongside renowned titles such as Stardew Valley, Baldur’s Gate 3, Path of Exile 2, and Vampire Survivors. This tweet highlighted the connections between the developers of these games, all of whom are “friends of Jimbo” — a reference to the game update series that showcases collaborative efforts, except for Grinding Gear Games, the creators behind Path of Exile 2. This statement strongly suggests an interest in forming a partnership that could yield exciting new content.
Balatro Eyes a Path of Exile 2 Crossover: What Fans Can Expect
This is absolutely wild! Balatro is in the top 5 of Steam Deck’s most played games. What an honour to be alongside these incredible titles! Can’t help but notice all of these devs are friends of Jimbo… except one 😀 @pathofexile pic.twitter.com/t90PGZkWT5 — Balatro (@BalatroGame) December 18, 2024
Should Balatro’s aspirations for a crossover with Path of Exile 2 materialize, fans could anticipate new cosmetic additions similar to those seen in prior game updates within the Friends of Jimbo series. For example, past collaborations have introduced new card designs inspired by characters from franchises such as The Witcher 3, including iconic figures like Geralt and Yennefer. Although these updates may not alter the fundamental gameplay of Balatro, they present an intriguing incentive as players enjoy fresh visual elements and unique gameplay aesthetics.
In addition to celebrating accolades, LocalThunk has drawn attention to an ongoing critique regarding Balatro’s PEGI rating. The developer noted an inconsistency where another game featuring microtransactions received a kid-friendly rating, while Balatro has been categorized as adult-only. For now, it appears that changes regarding its rating are unlikely.
