Warning: Spoilers for Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, part 3, Episode #10!
The latest episode of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has delivered yet another devastating blow to the Soul Reapers, marking a shocking and gruesome death within their ranks. This particular loss hits hard, especially as it involves a Soul Reaper whose talents have often been overlooked and who’s now denied the opportunity to showcase her remarkable abilities.
Nemu Kurotsuchi, serving as the Lieutenant of Squad 12 under the watchful eye of her creator, Mayuri Kurotsuchi, has a backstory that raises questions about her significance. As an artificial Soul Reaper, Nemu was developed using advanced technologies similar to those used for Mod Souls or the Gigai that Soul Reapers utilize when interacting with the human world. Though her character has largely been relegated to the role of Mayuri’s tool, she’s showcased a distinct personality that reflects her struggle for independence. Notably, her extensive skills include the capacity to store various poisons and medicines for Mayuri’s use, though many of these talents have gone unseen in the series.
Nemu’s Final Battle Made Her A Worthy Lieutenant
Nemu Proved She Always Had the Skill to Be a Lieutenant
In a pivotal clash against Pernida, Nemu heroically intervened to save Mayuri after his arm was severed by Pernida’s nerves. She provided him with a regenerative medicine that hastened the regrowth of his arm, much to his displeasure, as he had not requested her assistance. Mayuri imparts upon Nemu a coagulating agent aimed at incapacitating Pernida’s biological systems.
Demonstrating immense bravery, Nemu traversed the perilous battlefield to administer the medicine as directed. However, her efforts were insufficient to subdue Pernida entirely. In a moment of fierce dedication, Nemu escalated her defensive actions, sacrificing her own cellular integrity to shield Mayuri. In defiance of his protests that she wasn’t meant to be his protector, she launched a significant attack utilizing a portion of her essence, creating a damaging breach in Pernida. Nevertheless, the counterattack proved fatal as Pernida retaliated, resulting in Nemu’s harrowing demise.
This moment in battle encapsulates Nemu’s evolution as a character; she developed beyond her intended role, demonstrating the growth that Mayuri had always pursued for her. However, her evolution ultimately led to her tragic end, leaving Mayuri grappling with emotions he struggles to comprehend.
Is Death Really The End for Mayuri’s Greatest Creation?
Nemu Was the Latest in a Line of Experiments
Known in her developmental phase as Nemuri Nanago, Nemu represented experiment #7 in Mayuri’s ambitious Nemuri Project. She stands out as the first and only successful artificial Soul Reaper to surpass the anticipated lifespan of two years, although her value was often overlooked by Mayuri. Despite Nemu’s death during her confrontation with Pernida, the preservation of her brain offers a glimmer of hope that her story may not be over. If the medical apparatus that Mayuri utilized can sustain her brain, the possibility of a revival exists.
Additionally, Mayuri retains all of the research and experimental insights from Project Nemuri. He has likely gained crucial knowledge that could enable him to tackle the cell division challenges that afflicted previous iterations of his creations. Though Mayuri now faces the daunting task of nurturing a new Nemu without the ability to accelerate her growth, it seems improbable that he would abandon his pursuit of creating the ultimate form of artificial life. Following the conclusion of the ongoing war, it’s highly likely that he will recommence his experiments to recreate Nemu.
Ultimately, Nemu’s character has been underutilized throughout the series. She possessed an intriguing backstory that could have led to engaging narratives, yet her opportunities to shine were limited. This final confrontation allowed her to demonstrate her capabilities more than any previous appearance, showcasing her ability to adapt and exceed her parameters in battle. Despite the tragic nature of her demise, there remains a bittersweet note knowing that her sacrifice led to a critical blow against her foe, which is arguably a fitting end in the tumultuous world of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War.
