Box Office Update: Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Surpasses Moana 2 and Outpaces Struggling Lion King Prequel

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Outpaces Mufasa: The Lion King at Box Office

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is currently outperforming Mufasa: The Lion King at the domestic box office in the lead-up to Christmas. Both films are notable continuations of established franchises. The release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 marks the third installment in the live-action adaptations of the popular video game series, a trend that is augmented by the recent introduction of the Paramount+ spinoff series, Knuckles. On the other hand, Mufasa serves as a prequel to Disney’s successful 2019 remake of The Lion King, which previously set the record for the highest-grossing animated film at $1.66 billion until overtaken by Inside Out 2 in 2024.

Box Office Projections

According to Deadline, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is on track to secure the top position at the domestic box office with an estimated opening weekend total of approximately $70.5 million. This strong performance is expected to surpass Moana 2, which had been leading the box office for three consecutive weekends following its release around Thanksgiving. In contrast, Mufasa: The Lion King is projected to achieve an opening gross between $36 million and $38 million.
