Bright Eyes Cancel Upcoming Record Release Shows: Statement from the Band

Bright Eyes has unfortunately canceled their upcoming concerts this week in promotion of their latest record, Five Dice, All Threes. In a statement released via their Instagram account on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, the band announced that the cancellations were necessary due to frontman Conor Oberst losing his voice. The statement read:

“We’re heartbroken to announce that our upcoming record release shows have been canceled. The warm-up shows we played earlier this week resulted in Conor losing his voice, and on the advice of doctors, we’ve made the difficult but sensible decision to prioritize rest and recuperation for the remainder of the month.”

Bright Eyes was scheduled to perform at Brooklyn Steel in New York City on Thursday, Riot Fest in Chicago on Saturday, and Steel House in Omaha on Sunday.

The album Five Dice, All Threes marks the indie rock band’s first album release in four years, following their tenth studio album, Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was.

Collaborations in Bright Eyes’ Five Dice, All Threes

In their announcement, Bright Eyes also expressed their commitment to rescheduling the canceled concerts, stating:

“We’re working hard to reschedule these dates and will keep you updated as soon as we have more info. In the meantime, refunds will be available at the point of purchase. Thank you for your understanding, love, and support. Can’t wait to see you soon.”

Earlier this year, Bright Eyes revealed their album Five Dice, All Threes and announced plans for a supporting tour. The tour is set to kick off later this year, featuring performances in the UK and multiple cities throughout Europe, continuing through April 2025, with additional concerts planned in the United States next year.

The upcoming album includes collaborations with notable artists such as Cat Power, The National’s Matt Berninger, and So So Glos’ Alex Orange Drink. When discussing his work with Power and Berninger, Oberst mentioned to NME in September 2024 that he could hear their voices while crafting the songs.

Oberst reminisced about first meeting Cat Power in 2000, stating that he was a fan before they met, saying:

“When we were making ‘All Threes’ I could just hear her voice, so I texted her and got it sent to her. She lives in Miami now, but she sang it in her studio and sent it back.”

Conor also highlighted his close friendship with Matt Berninger, recalling his introduction to The National after their album Alligator released in 2005. He added:

“Five or six years later, we ended up doing this weird podcast thing where we interviewed each other, and that turned into, ‘Now we’re drinking wine all night,’ and now we’re good friends.”

Formed in 1995 in Omaha, Nebraska, Bright Eyes is an influential indie rock band led by Conor Oberst. Their popular tracks include Lua, Take It Easy (Love Nothing), and Singularity. The band took a hiatus in 2011 but made a successful return in 2020.

Their latest album, Five Dice, All Threes, is slated for release on Friday, September 20, 2024.
