Debuting in September, NBC’s Brilliant Minds has recently concluded its fall season with the finale aired on December 9. Following a brief break, the series is set to resume with Season 1, Episode 12, titled “The Doctor Whose World Collapsed,”scheduled for broadcast on January 6 at 10 p.m. ET. Rooted in the intriguing life of neurologist Oliver Sacks, this medical drama chronicles the journey of Dr. Wolf, portrayed by Zachary Quinto of Star Trek fame, as he navigates the complexities of the human mind alongside a dedicated team of neurology interns.
The episode “The First Responder”introduces EMT Katie Rodriguez, who begins to exhibit severe health complications. Mishel Prada, who brings Katie to life, expressed that the storyline has deepened her appreciation for the vital role emergency medical technicians play in society. Alongside Quinto, the ensemble cast features talents such as Tamberla Perry, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alex MacNicoll, Aury Krebs, Spence Moore II, Teddy Sears, and Donna Murphy.
In an insightful interview with ScreenRant, Prada discusses her rekindled collaboration with showrunner Michael Grassi from their time on Riverdale, the challenges her character faces as an EMT, and the potential development of a romantic subplot between Katie and her colleague, Dana.
Mishel Prada’s Connection to Oliver Sacks
“I discovered his book, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, at the age of 13.”
What differentiates Brilliant Minds from your previous roles?
Mishel Prada: This series is deeply rooted in the legacy of Dr. Oliver Sacks, whose work I’ve admired for years. I first encountered his book, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, at 13, which instilled in me a deep admiration for his compassionate approach to mental health. When Michael Grassi offered me this role, I felt an overwhelming excitement.
Having collaborated with Michael on Riverdale, the prospect of participating in a medical drama, which I had never attempted before, was both thrilling and daunting. Nonetheless, my respect for Sacks’ contributions motivated me to embrace this opportunity.
It seems like a remarkable journey for you.
Mishel Prada: Exactly! I initially thought, “Wait, is this real?”They sent the pilot my way for evaluation, and I asked a friend to view it with me to gain a critical perspective. Interestingly, my friend has facial blindness—a condition I was unaware that Dr. Sacks experienced. This connection deeply moved him, showcasing the representation of facial blindness in a way he’d never seen before.
How much insight were you given about Katie’s background, and what did you contribute creatively?
Mishel Prada: A significant portion of her background is articulated in her dialogue. Through her monologues, we understand her past experiences. As I developed Katie, I drew on my own experiences, recognizing how people often give so much of themselves that they eventually deplete their energy.
This narrative of balance and self-care resonated with me, and I aimed to honor that shared human experience in her portrayal.
The Struggle with Vulnerability in Brilliant Minds
“This is a beautiful character arc for her, as she learns to accept care without shame.”
How does the trauma from her on-the-job shooting affect Katie?
Mishel Prada: Katie often prioritizes helping others over her own well-being, exemplified when she risks her safety to assist a victim. After the shooting, she struggles to acknowledge her pain, choosing instead to focus on continuing her work, as accepting help is an arduous process for her.
In what ways has this experience altered her approach to her duties?
Mishel Prada: After the incident, Katie resorts to methods like adrenaline injections to keep performing her duties. Our consultant shared how many EMTs are driven by adrenaline—a notion I found eye-opening. It underscotes the reality that these first responders are everyday heroes, heroically working to save lives in our cities.
What was it like to see her find joy during the ice bath moment?
Mishel Prada: That scene represents a pivotal growth moment for Katie. By allowing herself to be cared for, she discovers the importance of community. Filming that scene was delightful because it illustrated how essential playfulness and joy are, reminding us all of the need for such moments in our lives.
Aspirations for Romance in Brilliant Minds
“Being a romantic at heart, I’m always supportive of a little romance.”
Do you envision a romance blossoming between Katie and Dana?
Mishel Prada: Absolutely! I believe in the potential for romance in any story. I’m eager to see how their relationship evolves.
The dynamics between Katie and Dr. Wolf are striking. How did you develop this rapport?
Mishel Prada: Dr. Wolf, akin to Katie, grapples with personal challenges. Their mutual empathy allows them to connect on a deeper level. They don’t just see each other as a doctor and an EMT; they recognize their shared humanity, which enriches the narrative and their interactions significantly.
Although you’ve worked with many actors, is there someone you hope to share more scenes with in the future?
Mishel Prada: I feel fortunate to engage with a variety of cast members. However, being part of a tightly-knit ensemble and exploring their dynamics more deeply would be an exciting prospect for me.
