Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered in February 2024, receiving a decent reception. Starring Gordon Cormier as Aang and Kiawentiio as Katara, the series currently holds a rating of 7.2 on IMDb. While it didn’t fully capture the original anime’s beauty, it had several commendable aspects.
Among the positives were the high-quality CGI and the cast’s ability to embody their animated counterparts. In March 2024, Avatar: The Last Airbender was renewed for two additional seasons, sparking hope among fans for an elevation in storytelling and character development. With plenty of source material available, the series plans to delve deeper into the Airbenders universe, introducing numerous new characters.
One of these new faces will be Miya Cech, who will portray Toph Beifong. Toph is an iconic character known for her Earthbending mastery and groundbreaking discovery of metalbending, despite being blind since birth. Taking on this prominent role could significantly boost Cech’s career, although she has already built an impressive portfolio with previous performances in various Netflix productions.

At just 17 years old, Miya Cech’s role as Toph could lead to widespread recognition. She has appeared in several Netflix projects, including playing the younger version of Ali Wong’s character in both Beef and Always Be My Maybe. Additionally, she made her mark as a child actress in Nickelodeon’s The Astronauts.
Cech launched her career in the American series Hawaii Five-0, portraying the young version of Kono Kalakaua in a single episode. Since then, she has taken on smaller roles in shows like Arrow, The Darkest Minds, American Horror Story, and Are You Afraid of the Dark?.
Her transition to Netflix, beginning with Always Be My Maybe, has paved the way for consistent success, leading to roles in shows like Young Rock and A Great Divide. However, none of these roles secured long-term relationships until now, with her part in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Season 2 is expected to premiere in 2025, although a specific date has not yet been announced. This information was disclosed during Netflix’s annual Geeked Week event, which showed a close-up of Toph’s feet, hinting at Cech’s debut as Toph in the series.
Additionally, Miya Cech’s casting further highlights the remarkable progress she has made in her career. Born in Tokyo in March 2007, she was adopted at five weeks old and raised in North Carolina as one of four adopted siblings. Cech began her professional journey as a child model.
Since then, she has only improved, now poised to take on one of her most significant roles to date. Her recent work includes portraying Ellie Licht in A Great Divide (2023) and playing Kym Chang Cohen in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, a streaming film.
Miya Cech is undoubtedly excited to join one of Netflix’s major live-action animated franchises, Avatar: The Last Airbender.
