Chainsaw Man’s Latest Cliffhanger May Have Foreshadowed the Manga’s Impending Nuclear Winter

Warning: Contains spoilers for Chainsaw Man Chapter #187Chainsaw Man has long been celebrated for its ability to twist the narrative and challenge reader assumptions. The climax of Part One caught fans off guard by unveiling the primary antagonist with only a mere 20 chapters left, while many had anticipated the Gun Devil to serve as the ultimate villain. Jumping into Part Two, the focus shifted to the ominous Death Devil, only to later introduce the terrifying primal fear known as Aging as the series’ new formidable foe. With Denji regaining his footing and Pochita benefitting from the support of his ally, the impending War on Aging is poised to commence.

Despite Pochita’s incredible strength, even he, known as the devil whom others fear, lacks the necessary might to confront a primal force like Aging effectively. Chapter #187, titled “Barf!”, illustrates these limitations but also reveals Denji’s quick thinking which brings the potential for reinforcements. The chapter concludes with a gripping cliffhanger, hinting at the return of one of the devils consumed and erased by Pochita—possibly one with catastrophic nuclear implications.

Over the course of the series, Chainsaw Man has consumed a multitude of devils, with some of their identities disclosed by Makima during Part One; however, she confessed that she could only recall a fraction of them. While numerous concepts could be revived to aid in the battle against the Aging Devil, any useful devil would need to possess extraordinary power. With some foreshadowing at play and Yoru’s ongoing involvement, the Nuclear Weapons Devil could be precisely what Pochita requires.

Chainsaw Man Might Need Help From the Nuclear Weapons Devil

A Devil Powerful Enough to Defeat Aging Is Necessary

From the limited glimpses of Pochita battling the Aging Devil, it becomes evident that Aging appears nearly immune to physical harm, resembling Makima’s resilience. Pochita might have the potential to consume this primal force, though Aging would find that extremely desirable. As Denji emphasizes, Chainsaw Man operates as a superhero and would never jeopardize innocent lives. For Pochita to successfully combat a regenerating opponent, he would require the abilities of something akin to a nuclear entity.

The return of the Nuclear Weapons Devil is not solely based on brute strength; it carries significant thematic weight, particularly with Yoru’s involvement. Her vendetta against Chainsaw Man is rooted in his act of devouring her companions, including the Nuclear Weapons Devil. Observant fans will recall that from the outset of Part Two, the War Devil aimed to compel Pochita to expel that very devil. While Yoru may not directly orchestrate this, if Pochita does resurrect the Nuclear Weapons Devil, it aligns with her original agenda.

Yoru exclaiming she will make Chainsaw Man vomit nuclear weapons in Chapter #97.

The repercussions of reinstating a being like the Nuclear Weapons Devil remain largely speculative. It could prove beneficial against the Aging Devil, but it might also unleash unprecedented devastation across Tokyo. Should it obliterate Aging, the fallout for Denji and Asa within this alternate dimension is unpredictable. Moreover, reviving this devil could potentially see Yoru transform from adversary to ally, presenting a threat even greater than her current role.

In typical Tatsuki Fujimoto fashion, Chainsaw Man defies predictability, opening up countless avenues for future developments. The impending arrival of the Nuclear Weapons Devil could herald an escalation of chaos, possibly prompting the Death Devil to play her long-foretold role in Part Two.

There Is Still Another Devil Pochita Has Yet to Return

Yoshida and Octopus Have Yet to Return to the Story

In the chapters leading up to #187, Pochita embarked on a consuming spree, erasing various devils such as Ear, Mouth, Snow, Bitterness, and Octopus. Notably absent from subsequent appearances is Yoshida, a significant character throughout Part Two. After losing his Octopus Devil, Yoshida has not been featured, which could appear anticlimactic given the ongoing tensions. Nevertheless, there’s a chance he might return in conjunction with Octopus to support Pochita in this critical moment.

While the utility of Yoshida and his Octopus may be questionable, especially alongside something as daunting as the Nuclear Weapons Devil, the narrative stakes have never been higher. Chainsaw Man is poised for one of the most intense confrontations yet, as the clash with the primal Aging Devil is on the horizon. Additionally, buzz surrounding the upcoming Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc indicates exciting developments are imminent, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
