Warning: SPOILERS for Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 2 In the latest installment of Cobra Kai season 6, part 2, Chozen Toguchi, portrayed by Yuji Okumoto, finds himself enamored with a new love interest. However, this romantic development would have likely drawn disapproval from his late uncle, Sato Toguchi, played by Danny Kamekona. Both characters initially appeared as adversaries to Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat”Morita) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) in The Karate Kid Part II, yet each experienced significant redemption arcs. While Sato found his way back to honor by the film’s conclusion, Chozen transformed into a reformed ally of Daniel-san starting in Cobra Kai season 3.
The conclusion of Cobra Kai season 6, part 1 saw Chozen return to Okinawa, aiming to win Kumiko’s (Tamlyn Tomita) affection. However, he faced disappointment upon believing that Kumiko had moved on to another partner. This led him to join Daniel and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) at the Sekai Taikai tournament in Barcelona, Spain. In a surprising twist, both Chozen and Cobra Kai’s sensei Kim Da-Eun (Alicia Hannah-Kim) realized their unexpected attraction while exploring the vibrant city in search of their students. Their ensuing romance has raised questions, particularly regarding how Sato would have reacted had he been alive to witness it.
Sato Would Disapprove of Chozen’s Relationship with Master Kim Da-Eun
Master Kim Sun-Yung and Sato Toguchi’s Rivalry
Given the historical context, it’s improbable that Sato would support Chozen and Kim Da-Eun’s budding romance. In Cobra Kai season 6, part 1, it is revealed that Sato Toguchi had a longstanding feud with Kim’s grandfather, Master Kim Sun-Yung (C.S. Lee). Their rivalry stemmed from training American soldiers in contrasting karate styles during the mid-20th century. Considering their animosity, neither would likely approve of their descendants engaging in a romantic relationship.
Even though Sato passed before the events of Cobra Kai, his disapproval of Chozen dating Master Kim’s granddaughter would likely be steadfast. Should Master Kim become aware of this relationship in the forthcoming season, it’s plausible to anticipate a strong objection from him. As a developer of the aggressive Tang Soo Do style that formed the backbone of Cobra Kai, he would find it hard to accept Chozen’s Miyagi-Do heritage, underscoring the fundamental incompatibility of their martial arts philosophies.
Sato & Master Kim Sun-Yung Would Not Forge a Friendship
The Conflict Resolved Between Miyagi and Sato
Since Sato Toguchi has passed away, the notion of reconciliation with Master Kim Sun-Yung akin to the path taken by Sato and Mr. Miyagi is implausible. The Karate Kid Part II showcased Sato’s intense desire to duel Miyagi over their mutual affection for Yukie (Nobu McCarthy) and it wasn’t until their climactic encounter that the two buried the hatchet. By the end of the film, they had transitioned from foes to allies.
In contrast to their bitter history, Sato and Kim have never fostered a friendship. Their unresolved conflicts render the possibility of a bond through Chozen and Kim Da-Eun inconceivable. Hence, should their romance continue in Cobra Kai, it will symbolize an unprecedented alliance between the Toguchi and Kim families. Yet, in a hypothetical scenario where Sato remained alive, his opposition to this relationship would be one point where he and Master Kim would likely align.
